
Beard Takes Title and Smashes School Record at Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A time of 17:35.76 not only bested the field by nearly a minute, IPFW sophomore Brittany Beard also broke an eight-year-old school record in the process, topping the time put together by former Mastodon great Crystina Martinez.
Beard's top finish, and coupled with a 15th place finish from Rachel Kacer, helped propel the Mastodons to a second place finish in the Silver Race of the 2014 Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic hosted by the Louisville Sports Commission.
IPFW took second to Lipscomb in the Silver Race, Lipscomb earning 54 points and IPFW 169. The Mastodons also toppled NCAA Division I foes Tennessee Tech, Marshall, and Chicago State.
Beard's time was nearly a minute ahead of the second place finisher, Kailey Williams from Alabama-Huntsville, and almost 30 seconds better than the fastest time in the Summit League heading into the weekend. Kacer crossed the finish line in a time of 19:10.53, an IPFW personal-best by over a minute.
Brittany Fensler's time of 19:38.34 put her 35th overall, with Taylor Busch running a time of 19:58.77, placing her 56th. Both of the times are new career-bests, Fensler by over a minute and a half, and Busch by almost 40 seconds.
Freshman Kayla McGurk placed 77th in a time of 20:07, 45 seconds faster than her previous best IPFW time, while Breanna Fensler was nearly a minute better than her previous best collegiate time at 20:07.30, placing 79th overall. Sydney Strang closed out the varsity seven with a time of 20:11.22 (another collegiate best), while Emily Roman's time of 20:29.97 was over a minute better than her previous season-best.
Cheryl Morris and Karson Rowe rounded out the Mastodons in the meet, and each running a personal collegiate-best time. Morris placed placed 187th in a time of 21:19.91, while Rowe took 189th in a time of 21:20.37. There were 404 total runners in the race.
The Mastodons return to action in two weeks when the squad competes at the NCAA Pre-National Meet hosted by Indiana State University.
