SCOUTING THE MASTODONS
The Mastodons face off against UM-Dearborn looking to rebound from their loss at Purdue on Monday evening.
In the game, the Mastodons trailed by 21 before fighting back within seven halfway through the second half before falling to the strong Boilermaker squad. ,Joe Edwards led the team with 12 points, while Steve Forbes added nine. Mo Evans pulled down a career-high eight rebounds while scoring five points. Joe Reed tied for the team lead with three assists (along with Edwards), while scoring seven points and pulling down six rebounds. The highlight of the game came with just over eight minutes left in the first half when 6-0 guard Isaiah McCray blocked the dunk attempt of 7-0 center A.J. Hammons, and earned the No. 2 spot on the ESPN SportsCenter Top 10.
This year the team has been led by Forbes who averages 15.5 points, while Edwards and Evans each average 11.6 and McCray at 1.4 points per game. The four are the highest scoring quartet in the Summit League, with Reed a close fifth on the squad at 8.3 points per game. The Mastodons out-rebound their opponents by 1.6 boards per game, and are led on the season by McCray who pulls down 6.8 rebounds per game, with Forbes right behind at 6.6 boards per contest.
Evans leads the team in assists and gives out 4.1 per game, while Edwards has given out 24 total assists - an average of 3.0 per game while also leading the team with 10 steals. McCray has a team-best nine blocks on the year.
SCOUTING THE WOLVERINES
UM-Dearborn comes into the Thursday night contest after back-to-back wins over Marygrove (86-81) and Great Lakes Christian (82-64), while also winning four of its last five overall games.
In the team's win over Marygrove the Wolverines put five players in double-figure scoring, with those five accounting for 77 of the team's 86 points. Jason Penn scored a team-high 21 points, hitting half of his 20 shots from the field, while Brandon Cole scored 19, going 7-of-10 from the floor. Paul Standtke had an 11-rebound, 12-assist double-double, while Jamiel Strickland had 15 points and a game-high seven assists.
Strickland is the team leader in scoring, averaging 13.8 points per game, while Darryl Mobley Jr. averages 11.4. As a squad the Wolverines get out-scored 65.5-to-61.6 (3.9 per game), and get out-rebounded by nearly a rebound per contest. Standtke leads the team by averaging 6.8 boards per game, with Cole pulling down 5.9 while also leading the team with 2.7 assists per game, as just over half of the Wolverines' baskets (142-of-276) have been assisted.
BIG LITTLE REBOUNDER
IPFW senior Isaiah McCray currently leads the Summit league and is 49th in the country in defensive rebounds. While that is in fact remarkable, the biggest piece to the story is that McCray is just six feet tall. McCray ranks 216th in total rebounds in the NCAA. In the latest NCAA statistical report, there are just 27 players who play the guard position that rank ahead of McCray, the shortest of those sitting at 6-1 (Kevin Hardy of McNeese State and Joe McDonald of George Washington). Additionally, there are just three players who are 6-1 that rank inside of the top-250 in total rebounds in the NCAA this season.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
After his back-to-back double-doubles against Stetson and Miami (Ohio), IPFW senior Steve Forbes was named the Summit League Player of the Week. Forbes averaged 23.5 points and 10.0 rebounds per game for the week, hitting 70 percent of his shots and 19-of-24 attempts from the charity stripe.
BORN TO RUN
IPFW has had runs of at least 10-0 in five of the team's eight games this season, and has seven total double-digit runs, including a 15-0 run in the win at Stetson. The team's longest run came against Manchester in the opener (19-0), while the team also had an 18-0 run in the loss at Dartmouth.
