DeLAND, Fla. - Four players in double-figure scoring - including two with 20 or more points - helped pace the IPFW Mastodons past the Stetson Hatters by an 87-76 score on Wednesday afternoon.
Steve Forbes scored a career-high 22 points, hitting 6-of-8 shots from the field and 10-of-13 from the charity stripe. Mo Evans went 6-of-10 from long range, tying his personal-best for three-point makes in a game. Joe Reed and Michael Calder each scored 10 points - a career-best for Calder - as Max Landis had nine and Isaiah McCray eight.
Forbes also pulled down 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the season, while McCray added nine boards, helping the Mastodons to a 39-24 advantage on the boards. Landis and Joe Edwards each gave out four assists, with 16 of the team's 26 baskets coming off of an assist for the game.
Stetson scored first out of the gate before the Mastodons ran off the next eight points and never trailed again in the game.
After the Hatters fought back to tie the score at 20, IPFW pushed off on a 17-0 run over a six minute span, all of the points coming from reserves with Calder, Jure Gunjina, and the last eight points of the run from Landis. Behind the momentum of the run, the Mastodons took a 14-point, 37-23 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The second half margin reached as many as 19 for the Mastodons, before the feisty Hatters clawed their way back to within six before a 9-0 IPFW streak put the game comfortably into double digits before settling on the final margin of 11 at the final horn.
IPFW hit an even .500 from the field in the game, shooting 26-of-52, while making 12-of-30 (40%) from long range and 70.8% (23-of-33) from the charity stripe. Stetson shot 52.7% for the game, including a blistering 66.7% (20-of-30) in the second half. The Hatters also were 10-of-23 (43.5%) from beyond the arc and 8-of-17 (47.1%) from the free throw line.
