Mustangs Power Past Mastodon in Calendar Year Finale
12/30/2014 10:40:00 PM | Men's Basketball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - An Isaiah McCray three-point basket two minutes into the game gave the IPFW Mastodons a 3-0 advantage; however, the Cal Poly Mustangs ran off 13 straight points and the Mastodons never led again in the 71-57 loss.
Mo Evans scored a team-high 15 points while Steve Forbes - in his first game since December 11 - scored a dozen points. Joe Edwards scored nine points, with Michael Calder adding seven. Joe Reed pulled down a team-best six rebounds, with Calder dishing out three assists.
The Mastodons hit 44 percent of their shots, but made just 3-of-17 (17.6%) from long range and 10-of-18 (55.6%) from the charity stripe.
After Cal Poly opened the 10-point advantage, the Mastodons trimmed the lead down to three on an Evans three-pointer; however, a 16-4 Mustang run put the visitors ahead by 15 at 29-14 with 5:36 to play in the opening half. IPFW would not go quietly; however, cutting the gap to 12 at halftime on a Joe Reed lay-in.
Steve Forbes hit back-to-back IPFW baskets to open the second half, each time trimming the deficit to 10. Cal Poly pushed its advantage to as many as 21 on a Michael Bolden jumper, setting the stage for a 10-0 run - IPFW's 13th double-digit run this season - taking the margin to 11 with 5:39 to play in the game.
The Mustangs iced the game down the stretch, hitting four straight free throws in the 14-point Cal Poly victory.
McCray and Brent Calhoun each blocked a team-high two shots, with McCray and Forbes each adding a steal.
Michael Bolden scored a career-best 20 points, hitting 5-of-8 from long range, while David Nwaba scored 13 points.
The Mastodons kick off their 2014-15 Summit League season on Friday, January 2, when the team travels to Macomb, Illinois, to take on the Western Illinois Leathernecks in an 8 p.m. tip-off.
