Mastodons Drop Summit League Opener in Macomb

MACOMB, Ill. - The IPFW men's basketball team dropped its 2014-15 Summit League opener on Friday evening by a 73-67 score to the Leathernecks of Western Illinois University, despite a season-high 20 points from Joe Reed, and a 12-point, 12-rebound double-double from Isaiah McCray.
Reed missed his career-high by one point, hitting 6-of-13 shots from the field and 6-of-9 from the charity stripe. McCray scored a dozen points, while Mo Evans scored 11 times. McCray's 12 rebounds ties a career-high, as Evans and Reed each grabbed six, helping the Mastodons to a 36-35 advantage on the boards. Evans and McCray each dished out three assists, with McCray picking up a pair of steals.
The Mastodons hit just 39.6 percent of their shots (21-of-53) in the game, while hitting 7-of-24 (29.2%) from long range. Western Illinois converted on 39.6 percent of its shots from the field, and 33 percent from beyond the arc.
IPFW and Western Illinois traded baskets early in the game, with the Mastodons holding an early 10-7 lead following a Max Landis three-point basket sent the visitors into their largest lead of the game. Western Illinois followed with an 8-0 run to take a lead that they would not give up until the late portion of the opening period.
The Leathernecks led by as many as six at 28-22 with 3:49 to play, before the Mastodon defense stiffened, and IPFW out-scored Western Illinois 7-0 over the rest of the half to take a one-point, 29-28 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The hosts opened the second half on a 9-2 run to take a six point lead, and never trailed again in the game. The WIU lead ballooned to as many as 16 points with 5:04 to play in the second half, before the Mastodons fought back late in the game.
IPFW closed to within as few as six points at the final buzzer, despite the Leathernecks converting on 12-of-14 from the charity stripe; however, did not hit a field goal in the final 4:56 of the game.
Jabari Sandifer scored a game-high 22 points, while Garret Covington scored 17 - all in the second half. Mohamed Conde scored 12 points while pulling down 10 rebounds, as Covington dished out a game-high five assists.
The Mastodons look to even their Summit League record on Sunday evening when the team hosts the IUPUI Jaguars at the Gates Sports Center on January 4 at 7 p.m.
