HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The IPFW baseball will get its season underway when the Mastodons travel to Alabama A&M for a four-game series beginning February 15 at 1p.m (EST).
IPFW is coming off a 22-32 season in which the 'Dons were 21-23 before dropping nine of their final 10 games, all of which were on the road. The 'Dons split a pair of games with the Bulldogs last season, and went 1-2 against them to start the 2012 season.
The Mastodons welcome back three all-league second team selections in Caleb Fenimore, Steve Lowden and Tyler Shepherd.
Fenimore recorded 18 RBI while Lowden had 47 hits last season and can catch or play first. Kristian Gayday will make the move to shortstop this season after playing 42 games at third last season.
Shepherd, one of six potential starting outfielders, led the league with 29 stolen bases and was tops in the Mastodons lineup with a .296 average. Shepherd along with Shane Trevino, Evan VanSumeren, Brandon Soat, Malcolm White, and Carter DeBoe will all see action for the 'Dons early on in the season in the outfield.
Steve Danielak (5-4, 4.25 ERA) highlights the pitchers returning for the 'Dons. The opening series rotation will consist of: Brandon Pease, Danielak, Dane Davis and Ryan Wells. Davis and Wells are both new to the program after transferring in from junior college programs.
Connor Lawhead will serve as the primary closer for the Mastodons this season. Lawhead finished 10 games for IPFW a season ago, and tied for the team lead with three saves.
Games one & two Saturday, February 15, Doubleheader 12 p.m. / 3:30 p.m.
Game three & four Sunday, February 16, 12 p.m. / 3:30 p.m.
