Men’s Volleyball Continues Road Trip at Lindenwood, Quincy

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IPFW men's volleyball team continues their road stretch with a pair of MIVA matches this weekend. The Mastodons will travel to Lindenwood for a Friday night showdown with the Lions before heading to Quincy on Saturday.

SCOUTING THE LIONS
After starting the season 1-2, Lindenwood has won seven straight, including three consecutive MIVA matches.
The Lions are led by the two-time defending MIVA Offensive Player of the Week Colin Hackworth. Hackworth has a team-best 131 kills and is averaging 3.54 per set, which ranks 4th in the conference. Lindenwood also boasts the top setter in the MIVA in Tim Schmidt. Schmidt has handed out 410 assists this season and is averaging 11.08 per set.
As a team, Lindenwood leads the MIVA in assists per set (12.49) and aces per set (1.76), and ranks second in kills per set (13.30) and hitting pct. (.371).
SCOUTING THE HAWKS
Quincy enters Saturday contest having lost three of their last four matches, including one at home to MIVA foe Lindenwood in five sets.
Ian Lawson leads the way for the Hawks' offense with 109 kills (2.95 per set) while Brian Rogan has dished out 369 assists (9.97 per set).
Defensively, Brian Peth ranks third in the conference in digs per set averaging 2.38. Jarrod Kelso has registered a team-high 25 blocks.
ALL-TIME SERIES
Last season marked the first time Lindenwood and IPFW faced off on the volleyball court. In their first season as members of the MIVA, the Lions defeated the Mastodons in both meetings by identical 3-1 scores.
IPFW holds a commanding 39-4 record over Quincy. The 'Dons won the first 17 meetings in the series from 1993 to 2000 before the Hawks won three of the next four. Since then however, IPFW has won 21 of 22 matchups, including 21 straight before Quincy snapped the streak last season.
'DONS SET FOR ROAD STRETCH
After their match against Ball State on Jan. 31, the Mastodons play five of their next six contests away from the Gates Sports Center. The road trip concludes with a stop No. 1 ranked Loyola on Feb. 22.
BLOCK PARTY
IPFW registered a season-high 13.5 blocks in their 3-1 win at George Mason on Saturday, marking the most in a single match since Mar. 23, 2013 against Ohio State when the Mastodons had 17.0. Six different players recorded a block, including Ramon Burgos who finished the match with seven while Bryan Saunders added five more.
RIVERA'S BIG WEEK
In two matches this past week, senior outside hitter Eddie Rivera averaged a double-double with 17.0 kills and 10.0 digs to lead IPFW to a pair of victories. He hit a combined .375 with 34 kills against just seven errors and was responsible for 27 percent of the Mastodons' points (39.5 points of IPFW's 147).
DIGGIN' IT
Eddie Rivera climbed into the IPFW All-Time Top 10 for digs after collecting 20 digs last weekend in matches against Princeton and George Mason. Rivera currently ranks 10th on the list with 585 career digs. He is also the team leader in that category this season with 61.
RIVERA RANKED IN TOP-10 IN ASSISTS
Junior setter Omar Rivera currently ranks 7th nationally this season with 10.93 assists per set.
ROAD WARRIORS
After picking up a pair of road wins over the weekend, the Mastodons are 4-1 in matches played away from the Gates Sports Center this season.
