ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The IPFW men's volleyball team captured its third straight win on Friday night behind a career-high 13 kills from junior Bryan Saunders as the Mastodons swept Lindenwood (25-23, 27-25, 25-22), ending the Lions' seven-match winning streak.
The win evened IPFW's conference record at 1-1 and boosted the team's overall mark to 6-2.
Ramon Burgos and Eddie Rivera joined Saunders in double figure kills with 12 and 10 while Rivera also added three aces. Omar Rivera directed the high-powered Mastodon offense, which hit .343 for the match, with 41 assists. Luis Bertran and Andrew Sellan recorded eight digs apiece. Burgos and Nick Smalter made a big impact at the net finishing with five and four blocks, respectively.
IPFW sprinted out to a 3-0 lead to begin the night inside Lindenwood's Robert F. Hyland Arena, where the Lions boasted a 6-1 record this season. The home team would respond and, after trading several points, used a 5-1 run to grab a 14-10 advantage. The 'Dons were not fazed though battling back to take a 24-22 lead. Lindenwood fought off one set-point, but Saunders slammed down a kill on the ensuing rally to give IPFW the opener 25-23.
The second set was very tight early on with neither team able to gain control. However, with the score tied 16-16, Lindenwood used a 3-0 run to take a three-point lead late. The 'Dons answered quickly though, getting a pair of kills from Smalter before Saunders capped the run with a kill to level the score. The Lions were in position to even the match at one set apiece, clinging to a 24-23 lead, but Burgos would take things over. The junior middle had four consecutive kills for the Mastodons, leading his squad to a 27-25 set win.
In the third frame, Lindenwood, trying to avoid the sweep, built a 13-8 lead, but a string of errors would allow the 'Dons to climb back. With the score tied at 19-19, IPFW would tally five unanswered points to jump ahead 24-19. Lindenwood managed to fight off three match-points in a row until a service error ended the night for the Lions.
IPFW limited the hot-hitting Lions, who entered the match ranked second in the conference attacking at a .338 clip, to just a .258 hitting percentage for the contest. The Mastodons' defense also did an excellent job of containing the two-time defending MIVA Offensive Player of the Week Colin Hackworth, holding him to just 10 kills on 26 swings for a .154 percentage.
The Mastodons will meet Quincy tomorrow night at 8 p.m. EST before returning home to host Lewis on Thursday, February 20.
