
'Dons Earn Second Split On Opening Weekend

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The IPFW baseball team split their second series of the season, defeating Alabama A&M in the first game 10-5 before falling to the Bulldogs in game two 11-4.
Kevin Wirth led IPFW at the plate going 4-for-6, driving in five runs, scoring three and hitting his first home run of the season. Tyler Shepherd also had four hits on the day, going 4-of-8 with three RBI and stealing a base. Lucas Salerno and Shane Trevino both collected a pair of hits for the 'Dons while Kendall Whitman and Greg Kaiser each scored three times.
Alabama A&M jumped out to the early lead in game one, plating a pair of runs in the bottom of the first on a pair of singles.
The 'Dons answered in the second as Caleb Fenimore singled home Kevin Wirth. After a sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third, Shepherd lifted a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Greg Kaiser and tying the game.
IPFW would take a lead in the third as the Mastodons loaded the bases with one out. Wirth singled to score Carter DeBoe, and Kendall Whitman came around to score on an error by the Bulldog shortstop. The 'Dons added on another run as Jon Timmermen singled to score Wirth.
The Bulldogs added a run in the third and two more in the seventh, tying the game 5-5.
In the eighth with two outs, Shepherd drove home Kaiser, giving IPFW the lead for good.
The Mastodons added four more runs in the top of the eighth. With one out, Wirth connected on the first 'Dons home run of the season, a three-run shot, scoring Trevino and Salerno. IPFW added another run after loading the bases on an RBI groundout by Shepherd.
Connor Lawhead earned his second save in as many days, pitching the final 1 1/3 inning and retiring all four batters he faced. Kevin Kimball earned the win for IPFW, coming on in the seventh to pitch an inning of work without surrendering a run.
Dane Davis started on the mound for the 'Dons but had a no decision after going five innings and allowing three runs on seven hits.
In the final game of the weekend, the Mastodons had the bases loaded in the second and third innings but were held to just a run in both frames.
In the second, IPFW scored first as Trevino doubled home Whitman and in the third Wirth singled home Whitman.
A&M answered in the bottom half of the third, scoring with two outs.
The 'Dons tacked on two more in the fourth on an RBI single by Salerno and an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of DeBoe.
In the bottom of the fourth the Bulldogs would tie the game on a three-run home run off the bat of Julio Nunez.
Alabama A&M blew the game open in the fifth, scoring five runs, including three with two outs. The Bulldogs added two more in the six, both coming with two outs.
Cody O'Neal suffered the loss for the 'Dons, surrendering four runs in 2/3 of an inning. Ryan Wells started game two for IPFW, lasting 3 2/3 innings, striking out four and giving up four runs.
IPFW travels to Southeast Missouri State for a three-game series beginning February 21 at 4 p.m. (ET).
