AUSTIN, Texas - In the final game of the Texas Classic, the IPFW Mastodons topped the Louisiana Tech Techsters, earning a third-place finish in the tournament.
IPFW improved to 7-2 on the season, with both of the team's losses coming to nationally ranked opponents.
Larissa Franklin was a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate on the day, while Hillary Kartman was 1-for-3; however, that one hit was a big one for IPFW, a three-run home run in the bottom of the third inning, providing the game-winning score.
Neither team could find its footing early in the game, until the bottom of the third inning. With one out and Alex Bousquet and Franklin on base, Ashleigh Bousquet reached when the Lady Techster left fielder dropped a fly ball, giving IPFW a 1-0 lead. After a strikeout, Kartman followed with a three-run home run, giving IPFW a 4-0 advantage.
The top of the fourth saw a dropped fly on IPFW's part score two unearned runs, cutting the IPFW advantage in half at 4-2.
The Mastodons added to its lead in the fifth inning when Franklin walked, stole second base, was pushed to third on a groundout and then scored when Dani Pugh singled through the left side of the infield.
Louisiana Tech threatened in the top of the sixth inning, loading the bases with no outs. Back-to-back strikeouts by relief pitcher Megan Flenniken was followed by an RBI groundout to second base. Louisiana Tech's Hailey Winter, who was on second base at the beginning of the play, took off for the run, before first baseman Emily Olszewski turned and threw home, finding a waiting Audrey Mintari who was able to turn make the tag for the third and final out of the inning.
The last six batters of the game went down in order, securing the IPFW victory.
Franklin had half of the team's four hits in the game, as Pugh and Kartman had the remaining two. Miranda Kramer improved to 5-1 on the season in the circle, pitching five innings and striking out six, walking four, and giving up five hits and just one earned run. Flenniken went the final two innings, striking out two, and giving up just one hit.
The Mastodons return to action on February 21 when the team travels to Orlando, Fla., to compete in the Citrus Classic where the team will see South Alabama, Northern Illinois, Fairfield, Lamar, and North Carolina State.
