Mastodons Drop Pair at Citrus Classic

ORLANDO, Fla. - The IPFW Mastodons dropped a pair of games at the Florida Citrus Classic, falling to 19th ranked South Alabama by an 8-0 score, and to Northern Illinois 4-0.
Kayti Hanson led the IPFW offense by going 2-for-5 on the day, while Dani Pugh was 2-for-6.
Against the 19th ranked Jaguars, South Alabama scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning, half of which were unearned, giving the home team on the scoreboard a 4-0 advantage.
The Jaguars added an insurance run in the third inning, two in the fifth, and a final, game-ending score in the bottom of the sixth inning, activating the eight-run rule.
Ashleigh Bousquet and Pugh had one hit apiece for the Mastodons. Miranda Kramer picked up the loss in the circle, falling to 5-2 on the year after lasting an inning and a third, striking out one. Megan Flenniken pitched the next three and two-thirds of an inning, giving up three runs (one earned), striking out two.
In the afternoon finale, the Mastodons nearly struck early on, putting two of the first three batters on base with a pair of singles in both the first and second innings;however, both times all of the runners were left stranded.
Northern Illinois put the first runners across the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring four unearned runs, securing the Huskie victory.
Flenniken picked up the loss, pitching an inning in relief, giving up four runs, none earned, while striking out one. Kramer pitched the first five innings of the game, striking out five and walking two, scattering two hits. Hanson was 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Mastodon offense.
IPFW will face off against Fairfield and Lamar tomorrow afternoon in the second day of play at the Citrus Classic.
