ORLANDO, Fla. - After having the previous days' games canceled because of weather, the Mastodons split their final two games of the Citrus Classic, falling 5-0 to NC State while topping Lamar 7-0.
Ashleigh Bousquet was 3-for-6 on the day for the Mastodons, while Larissa Franklin also had three hits to go with a pair of runs scored.
In the opener, the Mastodons and Wolfpack were kept off the board until the top of the fourth inning when NC State led off the inning with a solo home run. The Wolfpack added four runs in the top of the fifth inning, and would not score again; however, the Mastodons were kept off the scoreboard for the third consecutive game, dropping IPFW to 7-5 on the season.
IPFW had six hits in the game, all from different batters, with only Beka Ferguson's coming for extra bases with a double. Miranda Kramer picked up the loss, falling to 5-3 on the year, striking out five in 4.1 innings of work, giving up five earned runs on seven hits. Kaitlyn Biere pitched the final 2.2 innings in relief, giving up just one hit and striking out one.
In the finale, the Mastodons erupted for six runs in the top of the third inning, the team's first runs of the weekend. Alex Bousquet opened the scoring spree with an RBI double that scored Prestlee Cooper. After an infield single that loaded the bases, Dani Pugh drew a walk that pushed home Kayti Hanson.
Hillary Kartman followed two batters later with a double down the left field line to chase home Franklin and Alex Bousquet, before Mintari followed with a double of her own to score Pugh and Kartman, giving the team six runs in the frame.
A two-out double by Franklin was followed by a run-scoring single by Pugh, giving the game its 7-0 final score.
Franklin was 3-for-4 in the finale for IPFW, with Ashleigh Bousquet going 2-for-4. Pugh, Kartman, and Mintari each drove in two, while Franklin crossed the plate two times. Megan Flenniken picked up her first shutout of the season, pitching the entire seven innings, scattering five hits and striking out seven.
The Mastodons, now 8-5 on the year, return to action on February 28 when the team faces off against Maris and North Carolina Central as part of the Mercer Bear Classic in Macon, Georgia.
