
Softball Looks to Rebound at Mercer Classic

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW softball team once again heads south, this time to Macon, Ga., to face off at the Mercer Bear Classic, where the team will face Marist, North Carolina Central, and Mercer over the course of five games in three days.
SCOUTING THE MASTODONS
IPFW heads into the Mercer Classic after winning its last game by a 7-0 score over Lamar in the team's Diamond 9 Citrus Classic finale.
This season the squad has been led by its pitching staff, which has a 2.30 team ERA with 99 strikeouts in 85.1 innings of work. Leading the staff is junior Miranda Kramer who is 5-3 with a 1.45 ERA. She has struck out 73 batters in 48.1 innings, walking 19 and allowing opponents to hit .203. Megan Flenniken - 3-2 on the year with a 3.13 ERA - has struck out 24 batters, as opponents hit .238 against her.
Leading the Mastodon offense has been Larissa Franklin. Franklin, a member of the Canadian National Team over the summer, is hitting .450 with a team-best 13 runs scored on the year. She has one double, one home run, and five stolen bases this season. Kayti Hanson (.324) and Dani Pugh (.302) are each batting over .300 this season, as Pugh leads the team with 13 RBI's. Ashleigh Bousquet has a team-best four doubles, while Franklin, Pugh, and Hillary Kartman have the team's three home runs this season.

Marist comes into its season-opener as the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Preseason Favorite, with sophomore Nicole Cheek being named the preseason Co-Player of the Year. Last season the Red Foxes advanced to the NCAA Tournament, where they fell to Oklahoma (17-0) and Fordham (5-3).
Cheek led the MAAC with 15 home runs and 52 RBI's last season while finishing second with 64 hits and 4 runs scored. Also back is Alyssa Zahka, who batted .371 with 22 runs scored, eight home runs, an 41 RBI's.
Melanie White and Janine Lalli return for a pitching staff that had a combined 3.14 ERA a season ago. White was 3-6 with a 3.19 ERA and 54 strikeouts, while Lalli was 7-3 with 36 strikeouts, and a 3.20 ERA.
