CHARLESTON, Ill. - Greg Kaiser had a career day for the IPFW baseball team, hitting two home runs and driving in seven runs, as the Mastodons scored a season-high runs in a 14-3 win over Eastern Illinois.
Kaiser hit his third multi-homer game of the season, finishing the day 4-5 at the plate and scored twice. Kristian Gayday went 3-5 for IPFW at the dish and scored three times. Malcolm White and Kevin Wirth each collected a pair of hits, while Wirth also scored three runs. Shane Trevino drove in three runs and scored twice for the 'Dons. All nine Mastodon starters collected at least one hit in the game.
The 'Dons got the scoring started in the second inning when Kaiser drove in Gayday on a groundout to the second baseman. Wirth, who had moved to third on the groundout, scored on a Panther wild pitch.
In the third inning, IPFW scored a run when Tyler Shepherd scrambled home on a passed ball.
Gayday led off the fourth inning with a single. One out later, Kaiser deposited the 0-1 pitch over the left field fence for his fifth home run of the season. Lowden and White followed with consecutive hits, before Shepherd brought home Steve Lowden on a sacrifice fly to center field.
Kaiser drove in another run in the fifth, as he singled to left field, allowing Wirth to score all the way from first. In the bottom half of the inning Eastern Illinois scored its lone runs of the game, two on a one-out triple and another on a two-out single.
For the fifth straight inning, the IPFW offense put runs up on the board, scoring six times in the top of the sixth inning. Evan VanSumeren and Carter DeBoe led off the inning with a walk and single, before Trevino collected his first home run of the season on a shot to center. Gayday followed with a single and Wirth doubled. Kaiser then stepped to the plate and with a 1-1 count delivered his second home run of the game, clearing the left field wall.
From there, neither team was able to get a runner past second base until the 'Dons plated their final run in the top of the ninth. A two-out single by Jon Timmermen scored Trevino for the game's final run.
Connor Lawhead earned his first victory of the season, pitching 4.1 innings out of the bullpen for the Mastodons. Lawhead surrendered two hits while striking out five Panthers.
