Baseball Travels to Eastern Illinois For A Weekend Series

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Field conditions on the IPFW baseball field has forced the Mastodons to cancel their first home games of the season and instead go on the road to Eastern Illinois for a three-game weekend series.
When: March 21 (3 p.m.), 22 and 23 (1 p.m.)

Scouting the Panthers:
EIU enters the weekend with a 4-16 record, after going 1-4 last week, falling at No. 7 Vanderbilt on March 11 before defeating Austin Peay in the Ohio Valley Conference series opener between the two teams on March 14. The Panthers also dropped both games of a Saturday doubleheader to Austin Peay. On Tuesday, EIU fell to Southern Illinois 3-2 as the Salukies scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth with two outs.
At the plate, Caleb Howell leads the Panthers with a .385 batting average. Demetre Taylor is EUI's leading run producer with 13 RBI while Frankie Perrone leads the team with three home runs on the year. As a team, the Panthers are hitting .262 while their opponents are hitting .299.
EIU Senior pitcher Joe Greenfield was named the nation's 49th best prospect of the 2014 senior class as announced on Feb. 3 by Baseball America. He is the lone Panther with multiple wins, with a 2-1 record on the season. Matt Borens is the lone EIU starter with an ERA under 5.0, at 2.38. As a team, the Panther pitchers have a combined 6.27 ERA.
