INDIANAPOLIS - The IPFW baseball team dropped the second game of its weekend series to Butler 6-4, despite an early three-run lead. The Mastodons are now 3-9 on the season.

For IPFW, Brandon Soat, Steven Lowden, and Evan VanSumeren collected a pair of hits on the afternoon. Shane Trevino drove in a pair of runs to lead the Mastodons.

Butler got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first with no outs on a sacrifice fly. In the top of the second, IPFW answered with its own sacrifice fly by Kevin Wirth to score Lowden. VanSumeren capped off the inning with an infield single to bring home Kristian Gayday.

In the fifth, IPFW extended its lead on a single up the middle by Trevino, scoring Soat and Tyler Shepherd.

The Bulldogs won the game in the bottom half of the fifth, scoring five runs after the first three batters of the inning reached on a hit by pitch and then a pair of walks.

Ryan Wells started on the mound for IPFW going four innings, allowing four runs, three hits, and struck out three. Kevin Kimball took the loss, dropping his record to 2-1 after surrendering two runs in one inning of work. Connor Lawhead came on to pitch the final three innings, scattering five hits without allowing a run.

IPFW looks to avoid the sweep in the final game of the series tomorrow, March 9 beginning at 1 p.m.
