Baseball Drops Final Game Of The Weekend To Butler

INDIANAPOLIS - A six-run third inning wasn't enough for the IPFW baseball team to avoid being swept, falling to Butler 10-9.
Kristian Gayday and Carter DeBoe led IPFW with three hits each. Gayday connected on a pair of solo home runs and scored three runs. DeBoe hit a grand slam to lead the Mastodons with four RBI. Brandon Soat also collected a pair of hits on the afternoon.
Butler scored a run in the bottom of the first, but IPFW answered in the top of the second on an RBI single by Kendall Whitman that scored Gayday.
In the six-run third, Jon Timmermen and Lucas Salerno led off the inning with back-to-back singles. After everyone was safe on an attempted bunt by Tyler Shepherd, Soat singled home Timmermen. DeBoe stepped in and deposited a 2-2 pitch over the right field wall for his second home run of the season. One out later, Gayday homered down the left field line, giving IPFW a 7-1 lead.
DeBoe added to the 'Dons lead in the fifth, stealing third and scoring on a throwing error by the Butler catcher.
The Bulldogs scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth on a home run by Quincy Quintero, then took the lead with five runs in the seventh, all with two outs.
Gayday tied the score in the top of the eighth with his second home run of the day on the first pitch of the inning.
In the bottom half of the eighth, Butler scored the game-winning run with two outs, after a pair of IPFW errors.
Nate White suffered the loss for IPFW, despite striking out the side in the eighth, but allowed one unearned run.
IPFW returns to the field for a four-game series at Ball State beginning March 14. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
