Gayday, Kaiser Homer Twice as 'Dons Split

CARY, N.C. - The IPFW baseball team earned a split with in-state rival Ball State at the USA Baseball National Training Center, winning game one 11-3 before falling in the second game 3-1.
In the opener, IPFW (4-11 overall) collected a season-high 18 hits, four home runs, and 11 RBI.
Ball State opened the first game with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first, but Kristian Gayday answered for the Mastodons in the second with a two-run blast of his own.
After the Cardinals added a run in the bottom half of the second, Greg Kaiser tied the game on a solo home run in the third, the first of his career.
In the fourth, Caleb Fenimore drove in a run on a double before Kaiser knocked his second home run of the day, a three-run shot to left field.
IPFW added a pair of runs in the seventh on a single by Gayday and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Steve Lowden.
In the ninth, Gayday capped things off with another two-run home run, his seventh of the season.
Zach Mishler earned the win for the 'Dons, pitching five shutout innings of relief, scattering three hits and striking out four. Connor Lawhead didn't allow a hit in the final two innings and struck out four Cardinal batters.
In the nightcap, the Mastodons had a tough time against Ball State starter T.J. Weir, collecting four hits in seven innings.
The lone IPFW run of the game can in the fourth inning. Brandon Soat and Carter DeBoe led off the inning with back-to-back singles. After Gayday walked, Soat scored on a passed ball.
Ball State scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth on a Mastodon error with two outs.
Ryan Wells earned a no decision, allowing one run and six hits in six innings, and striking out five. Kevin Kimball took the loss, dropping his record to 2-2, allowing two unearned runs in two innings of work.
The two teams will be back at it again tomorrow, March 15, for a pair of games beginning at noon.
