FORT WAYNE, Ind. - IPFW senior Ashleigh Bousquet broke the IPFW career home run record, passing Kristina Karpun with her 27th home run of her career; however, it was not enough as the Mastodons fell in the series finale with the Omaha Mavericks by a 6-3 score on Saturday afternoon.
Ashleigh Bousquet was 2-for-3 at the plate, while Hillary Kartman was 2-for-4, each hitting a home run. Megan Flenniken picked up the loss in the circle, pitching the first two innings and allowing three runs, before Miranda Kramer came in for the final five innings of the game, and also allowed three runs. Flenniken struck out three in the game, while Kramer fanned nine.
The teams traded scoreless innings, but it was not for a lack of baserunners on the part of the Mastodons, as the hosts loaded the bases in each of the first two innings, only to come up empty each time. Omaha struck first and took advantage of their first bases-loaded situation of the game in the fourth inning when Campbell Ditto hammered a one-ball, two-strike pitch over the wall in center field, giving the visitors a lead they would not give up for the remainder of the game.
IPFW answered quickly with the Bousquet homer to open the bottom of the third inning, but the Mastodons could not get anything more to go in the inning, and headed into the fourth trailing by three runs at 4-1.
Neither team would score again until the seventh inning, when the visitors put up two more runs, putting the Mavericks ahead 6-1. A Kartman two-run home run with one out in the inning cut the gap in thalf, but the team could not rally further in the 6-3 loss.
The Mastodons fall to 29-12 on the season, and 8-3 in Summit League play, while Omaha - who was picked to finish second in the preseason Summit League coaches poll - improves to 21-16 and 4-5 in league play.
IPFW returns to action when the squad on April 18 and 19 with a three-game series against the North Dakota State Bison in Fargo, N.D.
