FARGO, N.D. - The IPFW softball team split a Summit League doubleheader with the North Dakota State Bison, in a battle of the top two teams in the Summit League standings. The Bison won the first contest 1-0 in 11 innings, before the Mastodon bats awoke in the nightcap with a 7-4 victory.
Alex Bousquet was 4-for-8 at the plate for the Mastodons, with Dani Pugh going 3-for-8 in the 18 innings of game play.
The opener saw a dynamic pitcher's duel betweek the two Summit League leaders in ERA, Krista Menke of North Dakota State and Miranda Kramer from IPFW.
Through the first 10 innings of the game, neither team was able to put together a rally to cross the plate, until Logan Moreland hit a solo walk-off home run to lead off the bottom of the 11th inning for the game's only run.
Kramer struck out 15 over the 10 innings of work, scattering eight hits and walking one. Alex Bousquet broke up a no-hit bid in the top of the sixth inning, and the single up the middle remained the only hit of the game for the Mastodons, despite leaving a total of six runners on base.
After seeing the offense struggle to just one hit over 10 innings in the opener, the Mastodons opened the second game of the doubleheader with four runs and three hits in the first inning alone, jumping out early in the game.
The Mastodons loaded the bases with the first three batters as Ashleigh Bousquet doubled, Larissa Franklin walked, and Dani Pugh singled. A fielder's choice RBI from Ashleigh Bousquet scored Alex Bousquet, before Hillary Kartman's sacrifice fly scored Franklin.
A fielding error and a walk re-loaded the bases, before Caitlyn DeLong hit a two-run single scoring Ashleigh Bousquet and Beka Ferguson, and putting the visitors ahead 4-0 after the top half of the first inning.
North Dakota State chipped away at the deficit, using a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first inning from Alex Sobrero, and an unearned run in the fouth to cut the gap in half at 4-2.
The IPFW offense struck again in the sixth inning when Pugh singled home Kayti Hanson, setting the table for Ashleigh Bousquet, whose RBI single scored Franklin. Pugh was lifted for pinch-runner Taylor Gordy Prescott, who scored on a single from Kartman, giving the Mastodons the last of their seven runs.
NDSU fought back with solitary runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings, but the early deficit could not be overcome in the 7-4 Mastodon win.
Alex Bousquet and Dani Pugh were each 3-for-4 in the game, while Franklin scored twice. Three players, Ashleigh Bousquet, Kartman, and DeLong each drove in a pair.
Megan Flenniken improved to 15-5 on the season after striking out 12 batters in seven innings of work, scattering four hits and walking six.
The teams return to action on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. ET.
