FORT WAYNE, Ind. - In its first extra-inning game of the season, the IPFW baseball squad fell to South Dakota State 3-2 before dropping the nightcap 3-0.
Kendall Whitman led the Mastodons connecting on 3-of-6 at the dish with an RBI. Steven Lowden had a pair of hits in the first game while Carter DeBoe added two hits on the afternoon.
In the first inning of game one, SDSU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead despite not having a hit in the inning. IPFW starting pitcher Dane Davis carried a no-hitter through four innings, retiring nine straight batters at one point, before allowing a leadoff single in the fifth.
In the bottom half of the fifth, IPFW scored its first run of the game on a double down the left field line by Whitman brought home Lowden.
The 'Dons scored the tying run in the bottom of the seventh as Greg Kaiser began the inning by reaching second on a Jacks error. After a sacrifice bunt moved Kaiser to third, he scored on a RBI single by Malcolm White.
Originally scheduled for seven innings, the game went into extra innings as neither team plated a run in the eighth. In the ninth, SDSU scored what would be the game winner on a two-out single. IPFW got a leadoff single by Kaiser in the bottom of the ninth, but a double play ended the potential rally.
Conner Lawhead took the loss, pitching two innings of relief, allowing one run on two hits and three strikeouts. Davis ended his day going six innings and allowed just one hit and two unearned runs.
The Jacks jumped out in front in game two, scoring a run in the third and two more in the fourth as the Mastodons were held to three hits in the game, two of which came in the third inning.
In the third, IPFW had a pair of two-out singles by Whitman and Carter DeBoe, but a fly out ended the inning.
The other Mastodon hit came in the seventh on a pinch-hit single by Lucas Salerno, but the 'Dons were again bitten by the double play ball, ending the game.
IPFW starter Nate White suffered the loss, allowing three runs, two earned, in five innings of work.
The final game of the series will be a single nine inning game tomorrow, April 20, beginning at noon.
