
Mastodons Split Day to Open Denver Cluster

DENVER - The IPFW women's tennis team split its two matches to open the Denver Summit League Cluster, topping Omaha 6-1 before falling 6-1 to cluster host Denver.
The Mastodons opened the day when the squad took on the Omaha Mavericks, winning the match 6-1.
IPFW swept through the doubles against the Mavericks, as the No.1 pairs team of Marcy Huck and Mayu Sato won 8-2, the same score by which Carlota Trevino and Ella Norgren won at No. 3 pairs. Miloslava Shustova and Emily Richardson completed the sweep of doubles for IPFW with an 8-4 win.
The Mastodons picked up straight set victories in five of six singles matches, including a 6-3, 7-5 win by Sato at No. 1. Shustova (6-2, 6-3) at No. 3 and Sofia Sorokina (6-0, 6-2) at No. 4 won for IPFW. Huck and Trevino rounded out the singles portions with 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 and a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6, respectively.
Against the Denver Pioneers, the cluster hosts took the doubles compeition by scores of 8-5 across the three positions.
In singles, Mayu Sato remained undefeated at No. 1 singles during conference play with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 1. Sorokina fell in a tight battle at No. 4 by a 6-3, 6-7, 10-5 score. Two other matches, No. 3 and No. 5 needed a winning score to go into a seventh point, as Shustova fell 7-6, 6-3 at No. 3 singles, while Huck fell 7-5, 6-3 at No. 5.
The Mastodons close out the cluster on Saturday afternoon with a regular-season ending match against the South Dakota Coyotes.
