FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW softball team rallied from a 6-2 deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the score and eventually out-last Bowling Green 7-6 in 12 innings, before running away with a 6-0 victory in five innings in the afternoon finale, improving IPFW to 33-13 on the season.
Ashleigh Bousquet was 4-for-7 at the plate on the day, while Larissa Franklin was 5-for-9. Alex Bousquet drove in three, as Ashleigh Bousquet scored four times.
Freshman Katilyn Biere picked up her first collegiate win in the opener, pitching a scoreless eight innings, while Megan Flenniken got the shutout victory in the afternoon finale, striking out seven, as head coach John Basett picked up his 200th career victory.
In the opener, IPFW looked solid early, jumping ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning when the team got doubles from Ashleigh Bousquet and Beka Ferguson to put the hosts ahead early.
The Falcons wasted little time in answering, as the visitors ran together a stretch that included an RBI double, a run-scoring wild pitch, and a bases-loaded walk to put the visitors ahead 3-1, a lead that the squad would not give up until the seventh inning.
Back-to-back Bowling Green home runs in the top of the fifth not only put the Falcons ahead 5-1, but also sent IPFW starter Miranda Kramer out of the game in her shortest outing since mid-March, bringing in relief pitcher Biere, who had seen action in just 11.1 innings prior.
Biere closed the door in the fifth inning, and did not give up an earned run the rest of the way, an outing that totaled eight innings overall and ended with her picking up her first collegiate victory.
IPFW got one of its runs back in the bottom of the fifth inning when Alex Bousquet scored on a throwing error by the Bowling Green starting pitcher Jamie Kertes.
After Bowling Green tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning on a throwing error, the Mastodons got back-to-back hits from Prestlee Cooper and Megan Flenniken, before Kayti Hanson reached on a fielder's choice. Alex Bousquet followed with her fourth home run of the season, cutting the gap to one at 6-5.
A batter later Franklin hit an infield single to the pitcher, and a Dani Pugh walked put runners on first and second, setting the table for Ashleigh Bouquet, who hit her second double of the game, chasing home Franklin and sending the game into extra innings.
Neither team could gather any momentum through the first four extra innings u
ntil the Mastodons started a one-out rally in the bottom of the 12th inning with a single from Ashleigh Bousquet and a double by Hillary Kartman that put runners on second and third. Ferguson followed with a single over the head of the Bowling Green left field, pushing home Bousquet for the game-winning score.
Ashleigh Bousquet was 3-for-5 in the game with two runs scores, while Ferguson, Alex Bousquet, and Franklin each picked up two hits. Each of the Bousquet's scored twice, while Alex Bousquet drove in three.
Biere struck out one and walked three, while scattering three hits over eight innings of work. Kramer gave up five runs in four innings with four strikeouts.
Kertes, who was brought back to start the second game, and Flenniken battled through a scoreless first three and a half innings. IPFW started its rally by loading the bases with a single, walk, and single in the bottom of the fourth inning, before a foul-out put the first out on the board. Emily Olszewski followed by grounding to the pitcher who threw home for the force-out; however, as Bowling Green catcher Emily McClelland made her attempt to first base for the double play, a sliding Franklin caught the back end of McClelland's leg, forcing the throw to go off target. Ashleigh Bousquet and Pugh each scored on the throwing error, putting Olszewski on third, before scoring a play later on an infield single by Cooper.
After a 1-2-3 top of the fifth inning, Franklin hit a one-out solo home run, putting the hosts ahead 4-0. Pugh followed with a double, which was chased with Ashleigh Bousquet reaching base when she was hit by a pitch. A single by Kartman loaded the bases for the second straight inning, before Olszewski hit a two-run double to right-center field, scoring Pugh and Ashleigh Bouquet, and giving the game its final margin.
After the close of the fifth inning - which was just past 8 p.m. - the umpires called the game because of darkness, securing the 6-0 Mastodon victory.
Franklin was a perfect 3-for-3 in the nightcap, with the team's other six hits came from six different batters. Pugh and Ashleigh Bousquet each scored twice, with Olszewski leading the team with two RBIs.
Flenniken struck out seven in five innings of work, scattering four hits and walking one.
The squad returns to action in six days when the team travels to Ypsilanti, Mich., to face off against the Eagles of Eastern Michigan University.
