
Mastodons Drops Series Opener To Leathernecks

MACOMB, Ill. - In its series opener, the IPFW baseball team dropped its doubleheader with Western Illinois 3-2 in game one and game two 5-4.
Greg Kaiser and Carter DeBoe led the Mastodons on the afternoon, collecting three hits, respectively. Malcolm White, Tyler Shepherd, and Kevin Wirth each had a pair of hits while Wirth also drove in a pair of runs.
IPFW fell behind early as Western Illinois scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first.
The Mastodons answered back in the second inning as Caleb Fenimore singled home Kaiser who had reached on a double. IPFW added a run in the third as Wirth doubled down the right field line to score DeBoe who doubled to lead off the inning.
The Leathernecks tied the game in the bottom of the sixth as the 'Dons committed an error on a delayed steal attempt. WIU won it in the seventh on a bases loaded walk to take the opening game.
Reliever Connor Lawhead took the loss for the Mastodons, allowing one run and striking out three in 1.1 innings of work. Starter Steve Danielak struck out five and allowed one run in four innings of work.
The Leathernecks again scored first in game two with a pair of runs in the first inning with two outs and one more in the third after back-to-back hits to lead off the inning.
IPFW got on the scoreboard in the fifth. With one out, Kaiser singled and Kendall Whitman followed with a double. Kaiser would come home on an RBI groundout by Steve Lowden.
WIU scored the run back in the bottom half of the inning with two outs.
The Mastodons scored a pair of two-out runs of their own in the sixth. With two outs and a pair of runners on, Wirth singled to center field scoring DeBoe. Kaiser followed with a single to left to plate another run.
IPFW attempted to make a late-inning rally, scoring a run in the bottom of the ninth. The first two batters for the 'Dons reached in the inning as DeBoe grounded out to score White from third. The rally came up just short though as the next two Mastodon batters were retired.
IPFW starter Dane Davis took the loss for the Mastodons, allowing five runs, four earned in six innings of work while striking out five.
The two teams close out the series with a doubleheader Saturday, April 26 beginning at 1 p.m. (EDT).
