DETROIT - The IPFW Mastodons used strong pitching against the Detroit Titans to win the opener 2-0, and then an offensive explosion that led to a 13-4 victory in the nightcap, as the Mastodons swept the Titans in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday.
Hillary Kartman went 4-for-6 at the plate for the Mastodons with two home runs and four RBIs, as Audrey Mintari was 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles, and Ashleigh Bousquet 3-for-6 with four runs scored and three runs driven in.
The opener was dominated by pitcher Miranda Kramer who struck out 12 in seven innings of work while giving up just a solitary base hit. IPFW scored both of its runs in the game in the top of the first inning, the first of which came on an RBI single from Kartman that scored Kayti Hanson, before Mintari doubled home Bousquet.
The Mastodons threatened in the fourth and fifth innings, each time with runners on second and third with one out; however, each time came up empty.
Kramer's hit allowed came with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, as the junior walked three in holding the Titans to 1-of-21 batting in the game.
In the nightcap, the Titans struck first, and took a 2-0 lead after the first inning. In the top of the second Kartman cut the gap in half with a solo home run. The margin remained 2-1 until the top of the fourth inning, when Dani Pugh opened the frame with a solo home run, before Ashleigh Bousquet singled followed by a Kartman walk. A double steal put runners on second and third before Mintari gave the Mastodons the lead for good with a single that scored Bousquet.
A Beka Ferguson single up the middle scored Kartman. The next two batters were put out, before Larissa Franklin singled home Mintari. After a pitching change, Hanson singled to load the bases, setting the table for Pugh who singled home Megan Flenniken and Franklin. Bousquet followed with a home run to right-center field, driving in three, and putting the Mastodons ahead 10-2.
A solo home run in the fourth was countered by a sacrifice fly by Pugh in the top of the sixth. Bousquet followed with a double and was pushed home on Kartman's second home run of the contest, putting IPFW ahead 13-3, and a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth would not put the score within eight runs, and sending the game home an inning early in the sixth frame.
Pugh's four RBIs give her 47 for the season, which stands as the 17th-most in a single-season in Summit League history, 11 away from tying the IPFW single-season record and 12 from tying the Summit League record.
IPFW went 12-of-28 at the plate against the Titans, and were led by Bousquet who was 3-for-4, while three others - Franklin, Pugh, and Kartman - had two hits apiece. Bousquet and Kartman each scored twice, while Pugh drove in four.
Megan Flenniken picked up the victory, pitching the first five innings of the game, striking out three and giving up one earned run. Kaitlyn Biere pitched the final inning of relief, giving up one hit - a solo home run.
The Mastodons return home on April 11 and 12 when the team hosts the Omaha Mavericks in a Summit League three-game series.
