Track and Field Stands Seventh at 2014 League Championships

FARGO, N.D. - The IPFW track & field team stands seventh at the 2014 Summit League championships; however, are just seven points out of fourth place after the first of three days of competition in the event.
IPFW earned one point from an eighth place finish in the hammer throw. Western Illinois is just ahead of IPFW with two points, while IUPUI and Omaha are tied for fourth with eight points each. South Dakota State is the first day leader with 44 points, while South Dakota is second with 33, and North Dakota State third with 21 points.
The Mastodon point came via an eighth-place finish from junior Kayla Zink, who set a new season best with a toss of 158-feet, 4-inches (48.26 meters). Teammate Kaeleigh Porter narrowly missed the scoring plateau, taking ninth overall with a toss of 153-7 (46.82 meters).
Zink also competed for IPFW in the javelin, where the junior placed 15th in her first time competing in the event with a toss of 90-6 (27.58 meters). Jazmin Zavala took 16th in the field with a toss of 78-2 (23.82).
In the final event for IPFW on the day, Rachel Zachar led a trio of Mastodons with a 12th place finish, completing the 6.2 miles in a time of 39:22.75. Andrea Bell and Amaya Ayers took 13th and 14th, respectively, in times of 39:52.27 and 41:48.65.
The Mastodons return for the second of three days of the Summit League Championships, with a day filled primarily with preliminaries; with the exception of finals in the high jump, shot put, and 3,000-meter steeple chase.
