FARGO, N.D. - The IPFW women's track & field team got 3.5 points in the high jump from Kyley Marano, a combined five points from Julie Jeszenszky and Kayla Boyes in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, and a big school record in the 800-meter run from Brittany Beard, as the Mastodons sit in a tie for fifth after the second of three days of the 2014 Summit League Championships.
Through nine scored events, IPFW stands tied with IUPUI for fifth place in the field with nine points. Western Illinois has eight, one points behind the pair of Indiana schools. South Dakota State's 80 points lead the field, while North Dakota State has 72, South Dakota 62, and Omaha 34.
Marano easily cleared her first three attempts at 4-11, 5-1, and 5-3, respectively, before narrowly falling on all three of her tries at a school-record height of 5-5. She finished the event tied for fifth, giving the Mastodons 3.5 team points.
In the steeplechase, Jeszenszky out-kicked Boyes over the last 100 meters of the race, as the classmates placed sixth and seventh, each. Jeszenszky ran to a time of 11:10.77, while Boyes ran to a mark of 11:14.01, a new personal-best for the senior. Emma Manchess finished 10th in the field with a time of 12:11.88, while Karson Rowe placed 13th, crossing the tape in a time of 12:34.47.
Kayla Zink narrowly missed making the finals in the shot put, with a best toss of 13.09 meters, which stands as the ninth-best distance in program history.
Beard's time of 2:10.65 not only smashed the previous school record in the event by over four seconds, but also gives her the top preliminary time heading into the event championship on Saturday.
Marano also competed in the 200-meter dash, running the program's third-fastest time - 26.06 seconds - and qualified for the finals in the event.
Kaylin Taylor narrowly missed a school record in the 400-meter hurdles, but her time of 1:05.10 is good enough for the third-best time in program history, and earned the senior a spot in the finals of the event.
In the 100-meter preliminaries, Whitney Hampton narrowly missed advancing to finals with a time of 12.99, just .26 off of the ninth and final qualifying spot.
Competition begins at noon ET tomorrow with the women's discus throw.
