
Relay Record Falls as Mastodons Tune-Up for League Championships

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The 400-meter relay team of Kaylin Taylor, Victoria Nida, Whitney Hampton, and Kyley Marano set a new school record in the event, while Julie Jeszenszky took first in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Dave Rankin Invitational hosted by Purdue University.
The meet, which is the final pre-League meet of the season for the team as a whole, was held at the site of the 2014 Big Ten Conference Championships.
The relay team sprinted to a time of 49.84, just ahead of the 49.97 that the 2007 team of Angie Suel, Brooke Newman, Nan Moore, and Brandy Swing put together in 2007.
Jeszenszky took first in the steeple with a time of 11:15.28, just off of her personal-best in the event. Emma Manchess placed sixth in the event with a time of 12:08.81, with Karson Rowe taking 10th in 13:09.87.
Marano added a fifth place finish in the high jump to her school-record relay leg, clearing a height of 5-3, a new outdoor personal-best, and tied for the third-highest clearance in program history. She also placed 20th in the 200-meter run, finishing the half-lap in a time of 26.87. Kara Scobey placed 24th in the 200 in a time of 29.45.
Another member of the relay team set a personal-best on the day, as Hampton placed 15th in the 100-meter dash, sprinting to a time of 12.86 seconds, the fourth-fastest time in the history of IPFW Track & Field.
Kayla Zink placed seventh in the shot-put with a toss of 13.02 meters, the ninth-longest distance in program history, with Lizzy Frazee taking 13th in a toss of 9.31 meters. Zink also led the team in the discus with a toss of 43.41 meters, while Shalyn Renfrow set a new personal-best with a toss of 38.08 meters. Zink's toss of 44.47 meters in the hammer throw paced the team and took 11th in the field, as Renfrow and Frazee placed 17th and 18th with tosses of 33.55 and 32.77, respectively.
Brittany Beard ran the 10th-fastest 1,500-meter time in program history, clocking a 4:44.33, placing 19th, while Kayla Boyes took 23rd in 4:52.56. Beard also led the pair in the 800-meter run, as her time of 2:20.44 is the eighth-fastest in program history, while Boyes crossed the finish line in 17th place in the field, in a time of 2:23.55. Emily Craig took 24th in a time of 2:32.26.
Taylor and Nida finished back-to-back in the 400-meter hurdles, Taylor eighth in a time of 1:06.26, and Nida ninth in 1:07.33.
In the 5,000-meter run, Rachel Zachar led a quartet of Mastodon runners in a time of 18:45.01, placing 12th, with Andrea Bell placing 16th in a time of 19:21.40. Amaya Ayers (19th/19:37.96) and Cheryl Morris (21st/21:59.74) also competed for the Mastodons in the event.
Alexis Wygant led a pair of Mastodons in the 400-meter dash, running to a time of 1:03.17, while Scobey took 17th in a time of 1:09.53.
Jazmin Zavala placed fourth in the javelin, heaving the spear 24.51 meters, with Frazee taking fifth in a distance of 22.54, and Renfrow seventh with a toss of 18.65.
A select number of athletes will compete in Toledo next weekend, before heading to the Summit League Championships hosted by North Dakota State on May 15-17.
