Mastodons Battle Back to Knot 2-2 Tie with Western Michigan

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IPFW men's soccer team came from behind to scrap out a 2-2 tie with Western Michigan on Sunday afternoon at the Hefner Soccer Complex. Raphael Kotzock anchored the team with six saves.
Kotzock made a game-saving stop in the first overtime as the Bronco striker tried to send one by in the center of the goal. Of Kotzock's six saves, three came in the first half.
After fighting through a scoreless first half, Scott Williams opened the scoring for the Mastodons in the 58th minute. After receiving Jacob Murphy's cross from the left side, Williams found the back of the net, beating the goalkeeper in the top left corner.
Western Michigan would respond in the 64th minute, earning a goal from Edu Jimenez after he received a pass from Zach Boch and dribbled it through the Mastodon defense, beating a Kotzock to his left.
The Broncos briefly held a lead after Nick Wysong scored off a free kick in the 79th minute.
Still battling late in the match, the 'Dons knotted it up in the 81st minute. Britt Watts began the play on the goalkeeper's right side, sending a cross to Murphy on the keeper's left. Murphy then powered the ball past the Bronco goaltender in the upper right corner of the net.
Western Michigan held the upper hand through the first 45 minutes, out shooting the Mastodons 10-5, including an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks. On the game, the Broncos outshot the Mastodons 22-15, but the 'Dons held the edge in the overtime periods with a combined 6-2 advantage on shots, including 5-1 in the second overtime.
IPFW heads to the Johann Memorial Classic in Las Vegas, Nevada, to take on UNLV at 10 p.m., on Friday, September 5. The Mastodons also face Cal State Bakersfield in the tournament at 1:30 p.m., on September 7.
