HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - IPFW sophomore Karl Wangensten-Oye, off of a 20-win performance as a freshman, was able to shake off any thoughts of a sophomore slump, as he picked up an individual title in the fourth flight of singles at the 2014 NKU Invitational.
Wangensten-Oye defeated teammate Jonathan Raa by a 6-1, 6-4 score in the championship match of the fourth flight, one of three championship flights the Mastodons participated in during the day.
Freshman Daniel Cardenas, after opening the tournament with back-to-back wins, fell for the first time in his IPFW career by a 6-2, 7-5 score to Christopher Angulo of Northern Kentucky. Martin Muadi fell in the finals by a 7-5, 6-1 score to Zach Berry of Dayton in the third flight.
The pair of Gerard Guell and Muadi fell 8-2 in flight one to Carsten Fischer and Josh Malyon of Dayton, while Andres Cobos and Cardenas dropped their match by an 8-2 score to eventual flight champion Armand Levandi and Erik Aunapuu of Lewis by an 8-2 score.
In the second flight of doubles, Raa and Wangensten-Oye, the two finalists in the fourth flight of singles, teamed up but fell in a tightly contested 8-7 (7-4) battle in the semifinals of the draw, as Carlos do Val and Tom Sizeland dropped an 8-1 match in the semifinals to eventual flight champion Simon Jayram and Colin Bernier of Dayton.
The Mastodons return to action next weekend when the team travels to Bloomington, Indiana, to compete in the IU Hoosier Invitational on September 19-21.,
