HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The IPFW men's soccer team battled back to secure a 1-1 draw at Northern Kentucky on Sunday afternoon in Highland Heights, Kentucky.
Following a rough takedown in the box, Corey Tom was awarded a penalty kick, which knotted the game at one a piece between the Mastodons (2-2-2) and the Norse (1-1-3).
"The guys played hard today," said head coach Mike Harper. "One of our goals this year was to get better results on the road. Getting a win the other day and now a tie is a huge confidence builder for us."
Trying to earn a win late in the match, the Blue and White had a relentless attack in the second overtime. Britt Watts and Spencer Brown placed a combined three shots on net, only to see NKU's A.J. Fleak turn them all away. Tom and Jose Rodriguez also had shots in the second overtime, but each were blocked by the Norse defense.
Northern Kentucky began the match with an onslaught of shots, as NKU's Caleb Eastham scored the first goal of the match following a takeaway in the Mastodon defensive zone, scoring from 15 yards out.
The 'Dons came out of halftime determined to tie the game, getting off nine shots in the second half. In similar fashion to the second overtime, Brown placed a shot on net, only to have it turned away by the goalkeeper in the 81st minute.
The teams split the overall shots with 16 each, while IPFW held a 9-6 edge in the second half. The 'Dons also outshot the Norse 5-1 in the second overtime. Northern Kentucky edged the Mastodons 7-5 in corner kicks, while the Blue and White earned a 2-1 advantage in corner kicks in the second overtime. Northern Kentucky held a 5-2 advantage in saves during the match.
The Mastodons return home when they take on the Cincinnati Bearcats on Wednesday, September 17. The match is set to start at 7 p.m., at the Hefner Soccer Complex.
