Forbes' Big Day Not Enough in Loss to Coyotes

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - IPFW forward Steve Forbes just missed a career-high scoring effort with 24 points, but a balanced South Dakota attack paced the Coyotes into a 64-62 Summit League victory on Saturday evening.
Forbes hit 11-of-13 shots from the field, and 2-of-3 at the charity stripe for his 24 points, while adding a game-high eight rebounds. Mo Evans scored 16 points, hitting 6-of-13 shots from the field while dishing out five assists. Isaiah McCray scored seven points with three assists and a game-high three blocked shots.
IPFW out-rebounded South Dakota 29-to-26, and had assists on 15 of the team's 25 made shots, and blocked a total of six shots.
The Mastodons hit 25-of-49 (51.0%) of its shots for the game and 7-of-11 (63.6%) from the charity stripe; however, hit just 5-of-20 from beyond the arc. South Dakota went 27-of-56 (48.2%) from the field and 40% (6-of-15) from long range in the two-point victory.
South Dakota jumped ahead early, and kept its lead throughout the majority of the first half, including by as many as seven at 20-13 with 8:37 to play in the opening stanza. The Mastodons immediately responded with a 9-2 run to tie the score at 22 apiece.,
The teams went back-and-forth over the remainder of the half, with the Mastodons taking their first lead of the game with 2:36 to play in the half on a Forbes lay-in. An Evans jumper with 1:26 left in the opening period; however, a mid-range jumper by USD's Tyler Larson sent the visitors into the locker room with a 33-32 advantage.
The second half saw eight ties and six lead changes, with the final lead change coming with under four minutes to play, as Joe Edwards hit a driving lay-in to give the hosts a 56-54 lead. South Dakota answered right back with five straight points to lead 59-56. A Forbes three-point play tied the game again at 59, but a jumper by USD's Trey Norris and three of four made free throws from the Coyotes sent the Mastodons to a 64-62 defeat.
Tyler Larson scored 14 points while Casey Kasperbauer scored 11 and James Hunter 10.,
The Mastodons return to action on Saturday, January 17 when the team takes on the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles in an 8 p.m. tip-off in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
