FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW women's tennis team opened the spring portion of its 2015 season with a bang, sweeping past Chicago State by a 6-1 score and then by St. Francis 5-2 on Saturday afternoon at the Empowered Sports Club.
In the team's opener, a 5-2 win over Chicago State, IPFW swept through the doubles matches, as the tandem of Marcy Huck and Mayu Sato won 6-1 at No. 1 pairs, and the duo of Kristine Lindal and Carlota Trevino put up a matching 6-1 score. Alina Schibol and Sara Sherif fought to a 6-2 win at No. 3 pairs, closing the sweep for the Mastodons.
Trevino had the first singles match to finish, as her 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles set the tone for a Sato 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 1. Trailing 3-0, Chicago State got its only point of the match with a win at No. 4 singles, before the Mastodons closed the door with a 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 win by Schibol at No. 2 singles. A Huck straight-set win (6-1, 6-2) at No. 5 and a Sherif 6-2, 6-7, 10-8 win at No. 6 ended the match, a 6-1 Mastodon win.
The Mastodons gained an early advantage against Saint Francis in the day's finale, as the Red Flash only sent five players, giving the team a default win at No. 3 pairs. The Mastodons took the point when Huck and Sato played out to a 6-3 victory at No. 1 pairs.
Sherif was again the benefactor of a small St. Francis lineup, pushing IPFW to a 2-0 advantage before a racket was swung during singles play. Sofia Sorokina took a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles, before Sato's 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 clinched the match win for the Mastodons. The Mastodons fell at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, before Huck closed the day strong for IPFW with a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles.
The Mastodons return to action in a week when the team hosts a trio of weekend matches, starting with a January 30, ,1 p.m. battle against the Eastern Michigan Eagles, before facing Illinois State at 6 p.m. A day later, the team faces Youngstown State in a 9 a.m. meeting at Empowered Sports Club.
