FORT WAYNE, Ind. - In its second home weekend of the 2015 spring season, the IPFW women's tennis team split its matches on Friday, January 30, falling 5-2 to the Eastern Michigan Eagles, before rebounding for a 5-2 win over Illinois State in the afternoon finale.
"I'm really proud of our effort today," said head coach Eric Burns. "We've been sharper in doubles, but our singles play really kept us in the match with Eastern and gave us a chance to win. We had an excellent match with Illinois State and it was great for us to bounce back after such a tough first match. Overall, the girls fought hard against tough competition and we made it through a tough and physical day of tennis. We learned a lot about the team today and this will help us down the road."
The Eagles took the first two doubles points, winning at No. 3 by a 6-1 score and then at No. 1 at 6-3. The IPFW pair of Kristine Lindal and Carlota Trevino led 4-3 when Eastern Michigan clinched the doubles point, and the match was halted.
Moving to singles play, EMU got wins at No. 2 and No. 4 in straight sets before the Mastodons got their first win of the day with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 Mayu Sato win at No. 1 singles, keeping the sophomore and defending Summit League Player of the Year undefeated in the spring.
The Eagles clinched the match, however, at No. 3 singles before Marcy Huck grabbed IPFW's second point with a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 5, before Sara Sherif fell in a battle at No. 6 singles 6-3, 2-6, 10-8.
In the afternoon finale, the Mastodons had to battle to earn the doubles point, as the first completed group was at No. 1 where the Redbirds won 6-4. The pair of Alina Schibol and Sherif picked up a 6-4 win at No. 3 pairs to knot the score, before Lindal and Trevino edged out a 6-3 win at No. 2 to give the Mastodons the important doubles point.
Trevino opened up the singles play with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles, before Sato needed three sets for a 6-0, 3-6, 6-2 win at No. 1. Sofia Sorokina clinched the match for the Mastodons with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles, giving IPFW the deciding point.
Illinois State took a three-set battle at No. 3 singles for its first point, before Sherif came back with a straight-set 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles.,
The Mastodons return to action on Sunday, February 1, with a 9 a.m. meeting with the Youngstown State Penguins at the Empowered Sports Club.
