FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW women's tennis team dropped its weekend finale to the Youngstown State Penguins by a 5-2 score at the Empowered Sports Club on Sunday morning.
"We just got beat by a better team today," said head coach Eric Burns. "Youngstown State showed up to play in the doubles and we came out with no energy. They carried that momentum into the singles. We battled hard in the singles and competed well, but we needed that same intensity in the doubles and we just didn't have it. You can't dig yourself into a hole against good teams. We need to go back to the drawing board with doubles because the cohesiveness was nowhere to be found this weekend. This was a disappointing loss."
Youngstown State jumped out quickly, winning No. 1 doubles 6-2, before winning 6-3 at No. 3 pairs. With the doubles point in hand, the No. 2 doubles team was pulled off the court before their match could finish.
The Penguins took the first four points of the singles portion of the match to clinch the win. YSU won 6-3, 7-5 at No. 2 singles over Alina Schibol, before taking a 6-2, 7-6 win at No. 4 over Marcy Huck. Carlota Trevino fell 7-5, 6-4 at No. 3 singles before Mayu Sato lost a 7-5, 2-6, 10-5 match at No. 1 singles.
The Mastodons staved off a sweep with a default win at No. 6 singles and an 8-3 win by Sofia Sorokina at No. 5.
The Mastodons remain at home for the first two matches of the coming weekend, hosting Evansville and Oakland on February 6, before traveling to Wright State for a February 8 battle.
