FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Coming off of a weekend where the IPFW women's tennis team went 1-2, the team made quick work of its Friday opponents with a 5-2 win over Evansville in the morning session and a 6-1 win over Oakland later that afternoon.
"I'm really proud of our effort today in both matches," said IPFW head coach Eric Burns. "The team fought really hard - especially in doubles. We have been struggling on the doubles courts, but the team fought through in both matches and were able to gut out the doubles point, despite still not being as sharp as we can be. This was key in both matches and we know it is a matter of time before things start clicking again. I'm really proud of our team today and the effort. We needed to step up and we were able to do that today. These were great wins over two excellent teams in Evansville and Oakland."
In the opener against Evansville, the Mastodons took quick wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, with Mayu Sato and Marcy Huck winning 6-2 at No. 2 before Alina Schibol and Sara Sherif picked up a 6-3 win at No. 3, securing the doubles point.
Trevino opened the team scoring in singles with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 3, before the Aces knotted the score at two with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles and a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4.
Trailing 6-2, 4-2 and on the verge of seeing the Aces take a match lead, No. 1 singles player Sato rebounds to win the next 10 games, taking the second set 6-4 and sweeping the third 6-0, putting IPFW ahead 3-2.
Sherif won in straight sets 6-2, 7-6 before Emily Richardson - who transferred last year from Evansville - won 6-2, 7-6 at No. 6 singles.
In the evening match, IPFW swept the three doubles matches, as Sato and Huck won 6-4 at No. 2. Sherif and Schibol won 7-5 at No. 3 before LIndal and Trevino won by the same extended score at No. 1.
Sato, using the momentum gained after her performance in the morning match, took a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles, putting the host Mastodons ahead 2-0. Trevino followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles, before Huck clinched the team victory for IPFW with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 4.
With the remaining courts cleared, Sherif picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win before Richardson closed the day with a 7-5, 6-0 victory to give the Mastodons the sweep on the day.
The Mastodons return to action on Sunday, February 8 when the team travels to Dayton, Ohio, to take on the Wright State Raiders.
