FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IPFW track and field team wrapped up its indoor home slate on Friday afternoon as it hosted the third annual IPFW Duals at the Gates Field House. The 'Dons came out on top in their head-to-head matchups against Butler, IUPUI, Oakland and Valparaiso and fell short versus Detroit. Overall, it was another solid outing for a young Mastodon squad.
Kiawna Cottrell continued her impressive indoor campaign, breaking a school and meet record in the 200-meter dash and tying the program record in the 60-meter dash. After clocking in at 7.91 in the 60-meter preliminaries to beat her season-best time of 7.92, the freshman followed with a 7.90 in the finals to nab first place. The time also matched the program-best mark set by Jazmine Perry back in 2011. She capped her remarkable day by recording a 26.01 in the 200-meter dash, breaking the meet record in the event and besting the previous program mark of 26.37 set by Kaylin Taylor in 2013.
Sophomore Tori Nida turned in the team-best time of the year in the 400-meter dash with a 1:03.07, while fellow sophomore Rachel Kacer's 10:48.69 in the 3,000-meter run was the top indoor time this season for the team.
The host team's 4x400-meter group of Nida, Kyley Marano, Jenna Quillen and Alexis Wygant finished with the second-best indoor time of the season with a 4:11.32 in the final race of the day.
In the field events, freshman Ashley Brown led the way for the Blue and White as she tied for first in the women's high jump event (1.60m). Marano and Quillen finished third (1.55m) and fifth, respectively (1.45m).
The Mastodons will wrap up the final month of the indoor season on the road, starting at the Ohio State Invitational next Friday, January 30 in Columbus, Ohio.
