COLUMBUS, Ohio – The IPFW track and field team began the final month of its indoor season at the Ohio State Invitational on Friday evening at French Field House on the Buckeyes' campus. It was the first of four meets the 'Dons will compete in on the road before the Summit League Indoor Championships at the end of February.
Freshman Kiawna Cottrell—a week removed from crushing the school record in the 200-meter dash and tying the 60-meter program mark—focused on the long jump this week, and for good reason. The first-year athlete bested the school record of 5.09 meters (16-7.75) that she set at the Mastodon Open back in December, with her longest jump on the day at 5.22 meters (17-01.50) earning her a fourth-place finish.
Rounding out the field events were Ashley Brown and Kyley Marano who earned a 1.58m (5-02.25) and 1.48m (4-10.25) to place third and fourth, respectively, in the high jump.
After sitting out last week's meet due to illness, sophomore Brittany Beard got back on track as she turned in a second-place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:19.57. Sydney Strang (2:32.31), Abbigayle Dunleavy (2:38.07) and Jazmin Zavala (2:51.14) competed in the event alongside Beard, earning fifth, sixth and eight, respectively.
The 'Dons fielded two distance medley relay teams, with the quartet of Strang, Beard, Kayla McGurk and Tori Nida posting the best time of the year in the event with a 12:55.06. The second group of Rachel Kacer, Brittany Fensler, Breanna Fensler and Andrea Bell finished with a time of 13.23.79.
IPFW travels to Akron, Ohio next Friday, February 6 for the Akron Open. The meet is set to begin at 5 p.m. ET
