FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Members of the IPFW track and field team headed out on the road this weekend to compete in two of the biggest collegiate events of the indoor season—the Akron Invitational in Akron, Ohio and the Meyo Invitational, hosted by the University of Notre Dame.
Sophomore Kyley Marano and freshmen Jenna Quillen, Sara Crawford and Kiawna Cottrell traveled to the University of Akron to participate in the Akron Invitational on Friday, February 6 and Saturday, February 7., Sophomore Brittany Beard—the team's top middle-distance runner—took her talents to the 28th Annual Meyo Invitational at Notre Dame, also on Friday and Saturday.
Quillen was the lone IPFW competitor in the Friday portion of the meet as she partook in the Pentathlon and earned a total score of 2,738 points. The mark was 35 points shy of her season best and just 54 points away from breaking the school record. Quillen also competed in the 60-meter hurdles on Saturday, earning a time of 10.25.
On Saturday, Marano and Cottrell competed in the 200-meter dash among a large contingent of student-athletes. After breaking the program mark in the event just two weeks ago at the IPFW Duals, Cottrell bested her own previous record of 26.01 as she ran the sprint in a time of 25.84. It was the second time this season the freshman had set a program record and then went on to break her own record in the same event—the other instance coming in the long jump. Cottrell wasn't done yet though, as she set out to break another school record that she had already tied once this season in the 60-meter dash. She did just that as her 7.86 in the preliminaries was the best-ever in IPFW track and field history, topping the 7.90 ran by both her this year and Jazmin Perry back in 2011.
Marano also turned in a solid performance, finishing with a time of 26.76 in the 200-meter dash to set a new personal career record in the event., The time was also the third-best on the team this season. Crawford was originally entered in the event as well, but was ruled out before the race began.
Beard headed northwest to South Bend to run in the one mile event at the Meyo Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The sophomore—who was sidelined in early January due to illness—bounced back to shatter the school record in the mile, clocking a time of 4:59.07. Beard bested the mark of 4:49.53 set by Crystina Martinez back in 2009.
The Mastodons return to action next week as they travel to Purdue to compete in the Fred Wilt Invitational on Saturday, February 14. The team has to more weeks of regular season competition before the Summit League Championships take place in Fargo, N.D. on February 27 and 28.
