Meet: Purdue Fred Wilt Invitational
When: Friday, February 13 | 4 p.m. ; Saturday, February 14 | 10 a.m.
Where: West Lafayette, Ind. | Mollenkopf Athletic Center
LAST TIME OUT
IPFW sent a handful of athletes to compete at two large collegiate meets in the area—the Akron Invitational in Akron, Ohio and the Meyo Invitational, hosted by Notre Dame in South Bend.
Freshmen Kiawna Cottrell, Jenna Quillen and Sara Crawford and sophomore Kyley Marano traveled to Akron, Ohio to compete in the Akron Invitational on Friday, February 6 and Saturday, February 7. Sophomore Brittany Beard was the lone Mastodon to head to South Bend for the 28th Annual Meyo Invitational at Notre Dame.
Quillen was the sole competitor for IPFW on Friday night as she participated in the Pentathlon, earning a total of 2,738 points. It was just 35 points shy of her season best and 54 points short of breaking the school record in the event. The freshman also competed in the 60-meter hurdles on Saturday, posting a time of 10.25
Also on Saturday in Akron, Marano and Cottrell raced in the 200-meter dash among a large number of entries in the event. After shattering the school record just two weeks before at the IPFW Duals, Cottrell broke her own record of 26.01 in the event, this time clocking in at 25.84. Cottrell didn't stop there, however, as she broke another record she had already tied earlier in the season. Competing in the 60-meter dash preliminaries, the freshman recorded a time of 7.86, besting the old record of 7.90 originally set by Jazmin Perry back in 2011.
Marano also had a career day in the 200-meter as she set a new personal record in the event, finishing with a time of 26.76. The time was also third-best on the team in the event this season. Crawford was originally entered in the event as well, but was ruled out before the race began.
In South Bend, Beard competed in the one mile race at the Meyo Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The sophomore—who was sidelined in early January due to illness—bounced back to shatter the school record in the mile, clocking a time of 4:59.07. Beard bested the mark of 4:49.53 set by Crystina Martinez back in 2009.
WHO TO WATCH FOR
Despite being a young squad with 24 underclassmen on a 27-person roster, a strong group of sophomores will lead the way this season.
Tori Nida, Kyley Marano and fellow sophomore Brittany Beard are all key returnees for the Blue and White as the trio were a part of last year's 4x400m relay that just missed on setting the program record a season ago. Nida also recorded team season-bests a year ago in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:01.06, while Marano turned in team-bests in the 200-meter dash (26.95) and high jump (5-4.25/1.63m).
Wygant was a stud in her first year for IPFW with indoor season-bests in the long jump (14-7/1.63m), triple jump (31-3/9.52m) and pentathlon (2274).
Junior Andrea Bell, a veteran on this year's team, will be in the forefront for distance running as she recorded a team-best time of 18:24.24 in the 5,000-meter event during the 2013-14 indoor season.
