No. 11 Mastodons Battle to Thrilling Sweep at Harvard

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The 11th-ranked (American Volleyball Coaches Association) IPFW men's volleyball team earned a nail biting sweep at Harvard, finishing 28-26, 28-26, 31-29. The Mastodons improved to 5-2, while the Crimson fell to 1-3, with each of their losses coming against ranked opponents.
Luis Bertran earned a season-high 15 digs, while adding an assist. Andrew Sellan led the 'Dons with 15 kills, while Alex Harthaller and Ramon Burgos each had double-digit kills with 12 and 10, respectively. Omar Rivera finished with 48 assists.
IPFW jumped out to early leads of 6-2 and 11-5, but Harvard would go on a 6-1 run midway through the set to tie it at 16. With the 'Dons up 23-20 late in the set, the Crimson would once again make a run and have a chance to steal the set, leading 25-24. Nick Smalter would keep it alive with a kill as the Blue and White wrapped up the first set on a 4-1 run, finishing 28-26. Bertran was a major factor defensively, scrapping out eight digs during the set.
With Harvard up 3-0 early in the second set, both teams would exchange the next eight points and keep it close throughout the match. After the Crimson went up 17-16, the Mastodons would earn the next four points to get their largest lead of the set. Harvard would hang in the set, earning the next four points, but IPFW would come out on top 28-26 once again.
In the final set, the Blue and White would pull ahead 11-8 early on following an 8-3 run. IPFW would earn a 21-16 lead before the Crimson fought back with a 7-2 run, tying the set at 23. The teams would then exchange the next 13 points in the longest set this year for IPFW before the 'Dons sealed the match with a 31-29 win. The third set saw the score tied 13 times with two lead changes as both Harthaller and Gabriel Quinones earned six kills in the set.
Overall, the Blue and White lead 56-46 in kills and a clean 6-0 in serving aces. IPFW and Harvard split digs with 35 each, while the Crimson controlled the front line with 17 blocks.
The Mastodons return to action when they host Lindenwood on January 30. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m. at the Gates Center.
