Rivera Moves up Career Assists List in Sweep of Lindenwood

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Senior setter Omar Rivera helped the 10th-ranked (American Volleyball Coaches Association) IPFW men's volleyball team earn a sweep against Lindenwood to open MIVA (Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) play. The Mastodons fought in close set wins, finishing 25-21, 25-22, 26-24 against the Lions. The 'Dons improved to 6-2, 1-0 (MIVA), while Lindenwood fell to 2-2, 0-1 (MIVA).
Rivera earned 36 assists during the match, moving him into sole possession of third-place for all-time career assists in IPFW history. Rivera has recorded 3,213 career assists, moving him ahead of Phil Bodine (3,188). Former U.S. Olympian gold medalist Lloy Ball tops the list with 6,526 career assists.
The Mastodons and Lions battled back and forth throughout the first set, going 8-7 after the first 15 points. IPFW would go on a 5-1 run, putting them up 21-16 late in the set. Andrew Sellan, Alex Harthaller, and Nick Smalter each recorded three kills in the first set, while Rivera notched 11 assists.
After going down 7-11 in the second set, the Mastodons fought back, eventually tying the set at 14. The Lions would take a slim 22-19 lead, but IPFW finished the set with six-consecutive points. Sellan led the comeback with nine kills on 15 attempts during the set.
The final set saw the 'Dons and Lions swap points, knotting the set at 14. Lindenwood took a narrow 22-19 lead late in the set following a 5-2 run, but IPFW stormed back with a 7-2 run to wrap up the match. Luis Bertran was instrumental in the comeback, earning seven digs in the set. The final set saw the score tied 13 times with two lead changes.
Sellan recorded 16 kills during the match, hitting .429, while Bertran earned his third-straight double-digit digs match, finishing with 10.
For the match, the Mastodons outscored the Lions 41-36, while Lindenwood edged IPFW 4-3 in aces. The 'Dons clipped the Lions 30-27 in digs, squeaking by 49.0-48.5 in points.
The Mastodons return to action when host the Quincy Hawks on January 31. The match is set to begin in the Gates Center at 7 p.m.
