Women's Volleyball Earns Comeback Win Over Leathernecks

MACOMB, Ill. - As the saying goes, 'It ain't over till it's over', and the IPFW women's volleyball team lived up to that motto Friday night as the Mastodons fought off a pair of match points in the fourth set to comeback and defeat Western Illinois 3-2 (24-26, 25-15, 21-25, 26-24, 15-6).
Somer Johnson and Nicole Rightnowar each capped off the night with a double-double for the 'Dons. Johnson finished with a match-high 16 kills to go along with 13 digs, three blocks, and a pair of aces. Rightnowar had a season-high 17 digs while adding 14 kills. Lauren Hoffman tied a career-high with 11 kills and set a new career-high with six blocks in the match. Natalie Seiler tied a match-high with nine blocks to go along with nine kills and two aces.
Olivia Hahn led all players with a match-high 23 digs and served up a pair of aces. Madison Jaqua led the Mastodons with 28 assists while Clair Marshall dished out 19.
Western Illinois took the early lead in the opening set as the 'Dons slowly chipped away at the deficit. The Mastodons gained a 16-15 advantage. Later, leading 20-18, WIU score the three straight points, as IPFW was unable to regain the lead again.
The Mastodons dominated the second set, jumping out to an early 7-2 lead. The Leathernecks closed the score to 7-6, but the 'Dons responded with a 9-2 run as they held off WIU down the stretch. Western Illinois scored four of the first five points in the third set, as IPFW was unable to tie the score and overcome the early deficit.
The 'Dons scored the opening point of the fourth set before Western Illinois answered with the next four. IPFW tied the set at 5-5, but the Leathernecks used an 8-1 run to take what looked like a commanding 17-8 lead. Trailing 24-21, the Mastodons fought off three WIU match points by winning five straight points to close out the set and force the decisive fifth set.
The Leathernecks opened the fifth set by scoring the first two points. IPFW battled back with three straight points to take the lead for good, 5-3. The Mastodons closed out the match on a 9-2 advantage as they picked of their first Summit League victory of the season.
IPFW takes a day off before returning to action on October 4 at Oral Roberts for a 2 p.m. ET match.
