Trio Earns Double-Double As Mastodons Drop Non-League Match
10/21/2015 10:54:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
VALPARAISO, Ind. - Three players recorded a double-double for the IPFW women's volleyball team, but it was not enough as the Mastodons dropped their final non-league match of the season at Valparaiso 3-1 (25-27, 26-24, 25-17, 25-21).
Nicole Rightnowar led the 'Dons with 18 kills while earning her third double-double with 14 digs. Somer Johnson earned her 11th double-double of the season with 14 kills and 12 digs to go along with three blocks. Madison Jaqua also finished with a double-double, her ninth of the season, with a match-high 39 assists and 10 digs.
Olivia Hahn had a career night for the Mastodons with a match-high 30 digs. Her mark is the most by an IPFW player since Tessa McGill had 45 digs at South Dakota State on October 27, 2012. Natalie Seiler finished the night with a match-high six blocks.
The Mastodons began the match on a tear, scoring the first five points of the set. Valpo fought back to tie the score at 6-6. The Crusaders eventually took the lead as the 'Dons trailed 12-9. This time it was IPFW battling back and take a 15-14 advantage. The Mastodons fought off a pair of Valparaiso set points to bounce back and score three consecutive points as Johnson closed it out with a solo block. Rightnowar finished with nine kills in the first set alone.
The second set saw the Crusaders take the early lead with a 5-1 advantage. The Mastodons trailed most of the set, closing the gap to 23-22 with a four-point run. IPFW again fought off a pair of Valpo set points, to tie the score at 24-24. This time it was not meant to be as Valparaiso scored the next two points to win the set.
The Crusaders took a 4-1 lead to begin the third set. The Mastodons cut the deficit to two at 13-11, but that was as close as they would come as Valpo closed out the frame on a 6-1 advantage. Valparaiso led by as many as four points in the final set. The 'Dons used a four-point swing to tie the score at 10-10 before back-to-back points gave them a 12-11 lead. With the score knotted 17-17, the Crusaders scored consecutive points to regain the lead before closing out the match with four of the final five points.
IPFW now prepares for its annual Pink Out match when it hosts IUPUI on October 24 at 7 p.m.
