IPFW Battles At Utah Of The Pac-12 Before Falling 96-79

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Jakob Poeltl scored 21 points to lead the University of Utah (7-1) of the Pac-12 Conference to a 96-79 men's college basketball victory past IPFW Saturday afternoon at the Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. Junior Mo Evans/Indianapolis scored a game and career-high 26 points for the Mastodons (7-3), who trailed just 39-36 at halftime, and have matched their best start to a season as a Division I program. IPFW will play again on Wednesday night, December 9, at in-state opponent Indiana University of the Big 10 Conference in Bloomington beginning at 7 p.m.
IPFW fell behind 4-0 early, before battling to take a 7-6 advantage at 17:36 after a three-point field goal by senior Joe Reed/Greenwood. The Mastodons seemed to stun Utah somewhat when they extended their lead to 18-11 at 14:24 following a layup by Reed. Evans scored 11 points during the first 4:47 of the game, including nine-straight on four consecutive possessions. The Utes, however, fought back and led 27-22 at 7:44 after a jumper from Jordan Loveridge, but IPFW rallied back to within 33-31 at 2:03 after another three-pointer by Reed, who scored 12 first-half points. Evans closed the period with a jumper and another three-pointer to make it a three point game at the break, 39-36, finishing the half with 18 points as Utah definitely knew they were in battle at that point.
Evans made another three-pointer early in the second half to tie the contest at 41-41 with 18:46 remaining, and it was tied at 44-44 after a three-pointer by redshirt-senior Max Landis/Indianapolis with 17:55 to play. Utah, though, scored eight unanswered points to lead 52-44 at 16:03, before another three-pointer by Landis made it 52-47 at 15:06. The Utes scored the next seven points to take control at 59-47 with 13:32 left, and Landis' third three-pointer of the period made it 59-50 at 12:22, the closest it would be for the remainder of the game. Back-to-back baskets inside from Poeltl made it 65-50 at 10:07, and IPFW could only get within 69-55 with 8:53 on the clock. Utah took its largest lead at 96-70 with 1:37 left, before the Mastodons closed the game with the final nine points, the last four scored by senior Michael Calder/Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Landis added 16 points, all scored in the second half, making 4-6 from the field, including 4-5 three-pointers and 4-4 free throws, adding three assists for the Mastodons, followed by Reed with 14 points and five rebounds, while Calder finished with nine points and three assists, off the bench. IPFW shot 45% (31-69) from the field, including 48% (13-27) on three-pointers and 100% (44) at the free throw line.

Loveridge added 18 points for the Utes, while Kyle Kuzma had 16 points and a game-high eight rebounds, followed by Lorenzo Bonam with 15 points, off the bench, and Brekkott Chapman with 10 points, off the bench. Utah shot 62% (38-61) from the field, including 44% (7-16) on three-pointers and 57% (13-23) at the line. Utah outscored IPFW 50-30 in the paint, and 35-16 in bench points.
Utah now leads the all-time series against IPFW, 2-0.
