LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. - The IPFW women's golf team closed out the Women's Mid-American Match Play Challenge with a loss to Ohio 0-5, then defeating Central Michigan 3.5-1.5 in the seventh-place match. Both contests were played as nine-hole matches after weather postponed the second round on Monday.
Played at the par-72 Lakewood Ranch Golf & Country Club: Royal Lakes Course, the tournament was played at 6,068 yards. During match play, total score is not recorded, however golfers compete hole-by-hole. The player that holes their ball in fewer strokes wins the hole. A match is won when one side leads by a number of holes greater than the number remaining to be played.
In the opening match, the Mastodons were swept by the Bobcats. Sydney Bailey's match at the third pairing came down to the final hole but she was unable to square the match. Allison Curtis, Brenna Sherwood, and Ashton Taft, all fell by scores of 2 & 1. Candi Keller dropped her No. 5 match 4 & 3.
The afternoon match saw Curtis win the final two holes over Arielle Roberts to take the pairing 2 up. In the No. 2 match, Sherwood won the second hole as she never trailed Grace Labrecque to win 2 & 1.
Bailey fell behind early to Chloe Guschewski, dropping the second hole. Bailey bounced back quickly with wins on Nos. 3, 4, 5, and 6, cruising to a 3 & 1 victory. Taft was in a back-and-forth contest with Natalie Johnson in the No. 4 match. After Johnson won the first two holes, Taft responded by winning Nos. 3, 4, 5, and 7 to go up two with two holes to play. Taft was unable to hold onto the lead as Johnson won the final two holes to square the match.
Keller led early twice in the final pairing, but the Chippewa's Amanda Walsh won the eighth hole to finish the match 1 up.
IPFW takes the next month off before returning to action on March 10 & 11 at Seminole State Spring Break tournament in Lake Mary, Florida.
