Offense Erupts as Mastodons Sweep Racers
2/22/2015 8:11:00 PM | Baseball
The sweep of the day improved the team to 5-2 on the season, tied for the second-best start in program history, behind only the 6-1 start from the 1977 season.
Brandon Soat was 8-for-12 at the plate on the day, scoring eight times and driving in 10 runs. Jackson Boyce was 5-for-8 at the plate with five runs scored, as Brock Logan and Shannon Baker each batted .500 with four and three hits, respectively. In all, the Mastodons batted .448 on the day, with 39 hits in 87 at-bats and a team slugging percentage of .667.
As the home team in the opening game, the Mastodons took part in a back-and-forth effort by scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning, starting with a Soat triple, before Kendall Whitman singled him home a batter later. A Shane Trevino single and a Brock Logan walk loaded the bases, before Greg Kaiser doubled home Trevino and Whitman, followed by a Jonathan Valenzuela-Reece sacrifice fly gave the Mastodons their fourth run of the inning.
Murray State wasted little time in answering back, as the Racers scored three runs, and kept the bases loaded before Tyler Lawrence hit his first home run of the season, closing the door on a seven-run second inning.
After IPFW went out without a run in the bottom of the second inning, Murray State added to its lead with a pair of runs on back-to-back hits, putting the visitors on the scoreboard ahead by a 9-4 score.
Three straight hits to open the bottom of the third inning pushed Logan across the plate off the bat of Valenzuela-Reece, before adding another run in the bottom of the fifth when Boyce singled home Valenzuela-Reece.
After the two-run inning from Murray State, the Mastodon pitchers tightened their focus, and went five straight innings without allowing a run.
Shannon Baker's two run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning cut the three-run deficit to one, while an inning later Logan knotted the score with a single to right field, scoring Soat. a batter later Baker hit an infield single to score Whitman, and put the Mastodons ahead by a 10-9 score.
Not backing down from a deficit, the Racers fought back and scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning to push ahead to a one-point advantage, and putting the offensive pressure on the Mastodons.
After an inning-opening strikeout, Boyce drew a walk before Evan VanSumeren reached on an error, putting runners on first and second. A batter later Soat proved to be the hero with a two-run double down the left field line, giving IPFW the 12-11 victory.
Brock Logan was a perfect 4-for-4 in the game, while Soat was 4-for-6. In all, six Mastodons had multiple hits in the come-from-behind win. Logan scored three times while Whitman and Soat each crossed the plate twice. Baker drove in a team-best three runs, while Valenzuela-Reece, Kaiser, and Soat each drove in a pair.
Jake Weber got the pitching victory, pitching the ninth inning and striking out two, giving up a pair of runs in the effort. Starter Evan Miller went an inning and a third, striking out one, before Zac Mishler came in and pitched the next four and two-thirds of an inning in relief. Zach Dowden tossed a perfect two innings, striking out two.
The Mastodons struck on offense quickly in the first game, and would not need any late-inning heroics to secure the win. A Trevino sacrifice fly in the first inning put IPFW in the lead from the opening frame.,
A walk, single, and single loaded the bases before Boyce hit a three-run double to provide the eventual game-winning runs. In the third the Mastodons pushed a run across the plate on an error, before four more runs came across the plate in the fourth inning, putting IPFW ahead 8-0.
After a Murray State solo home run off of the left field foul pole, IPFW opened the top of the fifth inning with a solo home run by Lucas Salerno, before the team got RBI's from Soat, Trevino, and Baker. Three more runs in the top of the sixth - on a fielder's choice and two bases-loaded walks - put IPFW ahead 15-1.
The Racers added a run in the bottom of the sixth, before Soat hit a grand slam in the top of the seventh, pushing home VanSumeren, Boyce, and Salerno, and pushing IPFW to a 19-2 lead. An inning later Soat homered again, giving the Mastodons their 20 runs, before Murray State squeaked a run across in the bottom of the ninth in the 20-3 IPFW win.
VanSumeren and Soat were each 4-for-6 at the plate in the nightcap, while Salerno was a perfect 3-for-3 and Boyce 3-for-4. Soat scored six times while Salerno and Boyce each crossed the plate four times and VanSumeren three. Soat drove in eight runs in the game, while Boyce and Trevino each chased home three.
Trevor Storie picked up the win on the mound, pitching five innings, scattering three hits and striking out three while allowing just one run. Cody O'Neal pitched the next two innings in relief, striking out four and allowing an unearned run. Nate White and Damian Helm each pitched an inning, with White striking out one and Helm two.
The Mastodons return to action next weekend when the team travels to Martin, Tennessee, to face off against the UT-Martin Skyhawks in a four-game series starting with a single game on February 27, a doubleheader on February 28, and a single game on March 1.
