Shane Trevino had a day-high four hits for IPFW (7-2), going 4-for-10 at the plate, while Brandon Soat and Kendall Whitman each had three hits. Trevino drove in six including a home run in the opening game, while Soat, Whitman, and Evan VanSumeren each scored three times.
IPFW jumped out quickly in the opener, scoring in the top of the second inning when Jon Timmermen singled into right field, droving in Shannon Baker, putting the Mastodons ahead 1-0.
The Spartans answered back an inning later with three runs in the bottom of the third inning, before adding another in the fourth to lead 4-1 in the contest.
From there, IPFW proceeded to out-score Norfolk State 17-2, including 7-0 the rest of the first game.
The game opened up for the Mastodons in the top of the sixth inning, starting with a one-out walk to pinch-hitter Grant Wilson, before VanSumeren earned a walk.
Soat, the defending Summit League Player of the Week, followed with a single to score Wilson. A Kendall Whitman single scored VanSumeren, as Soat scored on the same play from a fielding error by the Spartan left fielder. Trevino followed with a two-run home run, providing the game-winning runs for the Mastodons, scoring himself and Whitman.
Trevino followed up with a two-run double in the top of the ninth inning, scoring Soat and VanSumeren, giving the game its 8-4 final score.
Soat and Trevino each had three hits in the opener, while Whitman added a pair of hits. Trevino drove in four, while VanSumeren and Soat each scored twice.
Kyle Sorensen picked up the win in relief, striking out three and walking one. Starting pitcher Ryan Wellswent the first four innings, striking out five and giving up a pair of earned runs. Jake Weber picked up his second save of the season, going two innings and striking out two.
The second game opened as a pitcher's duel, with neither team finding the scoreboard until the sixth inning of the contest.
Shannon Baker provided the opening scoring for the Mastodons with a two-run home run, scoring himself and and Whitman, and putting IPFW ahead 2-0.
Norfolk State quickly answered in the bottom half of the inning with two runs of its own, as relief pitcher Nate White was able to strike out the Spartan cleanup hitter with the bases loaded to end the threat and keep the contest knotted at two runs apice.
After a scoreless seventh inning for both teams, the Mastodon offense used its patience to pull ahead with eight runs in the inning.
For IPFW, the first 11 players that came to the plate all reached base in one form or another, including eight on walks. The inning opened with back-to-back walks, before runners ended up on second and third as Wilson's sacrifice bunt attempt was bobbled by the Spartans, and scored a run.
Jonathan Valenzuela-Reece followed with a pinch-hit walk to load the bases, and after a caught stealing, Salerno walked to again to pack the bases. Boyce followed with an RBI walk - the game-winning run - before VanSumeren walked a batter later to put the Mastodons ahead 5-3.
Two more runs scored on wild pitches, before Whitman drove in VanSumeren with a single, before Trevino doubled home Whitman and Soat.
Norfolk State added a run in the bottom of the eighth, as the contest was halted after eight innings, giving IPFW the 10-3 victory.
IPFW had just seven hits in the nightcap, while drawing nine walks. Boyce had two hits for the Mastodons, while Whitman scored twice, and the duo of Trevino and Baker each drove in two runs.
Nate White picked up the victory in relief, striking out four over two innings of work, improving to 2-0 on the season. Zac Mishler started the game, striking out five while giving up two earned runs and scattering four hits over five innings of work.
The teams return to action on Monday, as IPFW will be the home team on the scoreboard for each of the final two games of the series.
