Baseball Splits Final Day with Norfolk State
3/2/2015 3:19:00 PM | Baseball
Greg Kaiser led the IPFW (8-3) offense with four hits on the day, scoring three times while also driving in three. Brandon Soat and Shane Trevino each had three hits on the day, while VanSumeren and Soat each drove in three. Jackson Boyce and Trevino each scored three times as well for IPFW, which out-scored Norfolk State 17-11 on the day.
The opener saw a brilliant outing by freshman Evan Miller, as the Mastodons jumped out to a 5-0 lead only to see the Spartans rally for seven runs in the seventh and eighth innings.
The game opened with a home run from Evan VanSumeren, as the Mastodons held the Spartans off of the scoreboard for the first six innings behind a 10-strikeout effort from Miller, as he scattered four hits and allowed two earned runs while walking five.
The Mastodons added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, the first run coming from a Brandon Soat double that scored Jackson Boyce. Two batters later Soat scored on an error by the pitcher, before Kendall Whitman scored on an error by the Spartan third baseman. A batter later Salerno drove in Trevino with a sacrifice fly, putting IPFW ahead 5-0 through six innings.
Norfolk State scored three times in the seventh inning, before adding four runs in the eighth, the game-winning runs coming on an RBI single.
The Mastodons got a walk in the bottom of the ninth, but could not push him around to score in the 7-5 loss.
Each of IPFW's six hits in the game came from a different batter, as did each of the team's five runs and four RBI's. Dane Davis picked up the loss, pitching an inning in relief while giving up two hits and three runs (one earned).
Neither team could get any offensive traction through the first inning and a half before the Mastodons reached the scoreboard in the bottom of the second when Shannon Baker hit an RBI groundout that scored Brock Logan, before Greg Kaiser scored on a passed ball two batters later to put IPFW ahead 2-0.
After another inning and a half of scoreless baseball, the Mastodon bats erupted in the bottom of the fourth inning with eight runs, the first coming on a Greg Kaiser RBI double that scored Trevino, who opened the inning with a triple. After a walk to Baker, Zak Kellogg singled to left field, scoring Kaiser. Boyce was hit by a pitch in the next at-bat, before VanSumeren hit a sacrifice fly to score Baker.
Soat followed with a two-run triple before scoring on a Whitman single. Back-to-back singles saw Logan single home Whitman before Kaiser picked up another RBI - in his second at-bat of the inning - when he singled home Trevino, putting the Mastodons ahead 10-0.
Norfolk State answered back with four runs in the top of the fifth, only to see IPFW answer when VanSumeren singled home Boyce, taking the score to 11-4. Boyce drove in a run in the bottom of the sixth when he reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Kaiser, and taking the score to 12-4.
Kaiser was a perfect 3-for-3 in the nightcap, while Soat and Trevino each had two hits. Kaiser scored three times, with Trevino and Boyce crossing the plate twice. Three players - VanSumeren, Soat, and Kaiser, each drove in a pair in the victory.
Trevor Storie picked up the win, going five innings while giving up eight hits and four earned runs, as Kyle Orwig pitched the final two innings, giving up just one hit while striking out one.
The Mastodons return to action next weekend with a trip to face off against the Butler Bulldogs in a three-game series in Indianapolis.
