CONROE, Texas - Playing against its second Big 12 opponent in as many days, the IPFW softball team dropped a pair of games to No. 6/4 Oklahoma 5-0 and 9-0.
In the opener against the nationally ranked Sooners, IPFW pitcher Kaitlyn Biere held the 2013 national champions to a season-low six hits, and their second-fewest runs. The 'Dons however were unable to get their bats going against Oklahoma pitcher Kelsey Stevens. The Mastodon's lone base runner came in the second inning as Caitlyn DeLong drew a one-out walk.
Three of Oklahoma's runs in game one came on sacrifice flies. The Sooners added two more runs in the third on a single and a triple.
IPFW center fielder Taylor Gordy Prescott recorded 11 putouts in the game, the most by a non-catcher since former Mastodon Audrey Mintari had nine in 2011.
Biere suffered the loss for the 'Dons, throwing all six innings and allowing five runs on six hits while striking out a pair of Sooner batters.
The nightcap saw the Mastodons threaten in the top of the first. With two outs, Emily Olszewski drew a full-count walk before Morghyn Neal singled up the middle. The rally ended as DeLong went down swinging.
Oklahoma pushed across five runs in the first inning on only two hits. The Sooners benefited from four walks in the inning while scoring on a single, sacrifice fly and a two-run double.
The 'Dons had base runners reach in all five innings. In the second, Whitney Ennis drew a four-pitch walk while Gordy Prescott doubled down the left field line in the third. Prestlee Cooper singled with two outs in the fourth inning and Gordy Prescott added a single to left in the fifth.
The Sooners scored a run in the second before Kaitlin Kowalski came on for Sarah Lazarowich to escape a bases loaded situation. Kowalski pitched out of another bases loaded jam in the third without allowing a run. Oklahoma tacked on three runs in the fourth as the 'Dons were unable to extended the game.
Lazarowich took the loss for the Mastodons in one and one third innings of work, allowing six runs on four hits. Kowalski allowed three runs on three hits while striking out two over the final two and two third innings.
IPFW returns to action March 6-7 at the Hampton Inn Camel Stampede hosted by Campbell.
